“If right and wrong can be compromised, why have right and wrong? If good can cave in toevil, what will values and principles be basedon?Conscience, the innate knowing of goodness, isthe very essence of humanity. Everything else,even our “inalienable rights,” can be forcibly taken away. e alteration of our conscience,no matter how small, must be consented tofrom within. Conscience, thus, defines humannature, and the right to conscience is a human being’s most fundamental right.No crime, therefore, is worse than the crimeagainst conscience.”

 July 20, 1999, in the wee hours, behind thecurtain of the dark night, the Chinese armedpolice force, ushered on by China’s then-ruler Jiang Zemin, launched a nationwide blitz arrest of Falun Gong practitioners, jump-starting a violentoppression of 100 million innocent citizens.o one at the time—neither the oppressed northe oppressor—believed the persecution could lastlong. To Falun Gong practitioners, the persecutionmust have been the result of a misunderstanding.ess than three months earlier, on April 25, PremierZhu Rongji had met with representatives of FalunGong practitioners and assured them of their rightto practice Falun Gong. As recently as June 14,a government spokesperson had stated that thegovernment never prohibited Falun Gong practice,and that people had the right to practice. How could a government contradict itself so quickly?More importantly, Falun Gong practitionerscould not think of any justifiable reason for thepersecution.
