A turning point in my life
As darkness still ruled the sky with an iron fist, I performed somelast-minute checks with my bag before setting off for secondary schoolwith my mother accompanying me. It would be a misconception thatshe was bringing me to school as she was on her way to work. Whilewe were walking, she advised me on proper etiquette in front of teachers and the works. When I saw my bus pulling in from the cornerof my eye, I bade her a quick goodbye and then ran as fast as my legscould carry me. I was lucky as I got on the bus in the nick of time. When I reached my school, I realized to my horror that I hadforgotten the class I was assigned to! After surveying the crowd, Idecided to line up with class 1H as I did not know where else I couldgo. My desperation really cost me some of my dignity. Luckily, mynervousness must have been apparent as I caught the eye of ateacher who was kind enough to direct me to class 1D. I asked myteacher’s which class I should be attending, just to make sure. I wasglad to have sorted my confusion out without much fuss, if not, Iwould be attending the normal technical stream, only to find out laterthat I had attended the wrong stream and embarrass myself in front of 1H!At 1D, my form teacher, Mr. Tay, introduced himself to theclass. He discussed about life in secondary school and how to adjust toit. Afterwards, our class took part in the orientation programme. Ahired trainer discussed in depth about secondary school life and someof the concerns that we should be mindful of, for example stress, timeand relationship management. We also had some bonding games, suchas trying to throw a ball into a dustbin while blindfolded and trying todraw while sharing your marker with a classmate who wanted to drawsomething different. It was an interesting experience for me.During recess, I went to the canteen and decided to take mychance with the ‘Nasi Padang’. The rendang was scrumptious and thesambal was magnificent. Then, I ventured to my most favorite part of the school, the glorious library, and despite spending only one recessin it, I found myself in love with it - the satisfying collection of books, the polite librarian, the IT resources and the relaxing air-conditioningand so much more. I decided that the library is a place that I will hangout often in the future and was pleased with the thought.
