The Otter Project
 Membership and Development Manager, Full Time
Organizational Overview
: The Otter Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rapidrecovery of the threatened California sea otter through science-based policy and advocacy. Programs includehabitat, oil, and water quality. Tools used include traditional policy advocacy, legal advocacy, collection andpresentation of data and scientific information, and partnerships with like minded organizations andvolunteers. The Otter Project is 12 years old, growing, and has professional offices in downtown Monterey(but is moving to larger offices). With this position staff will be 3.75 FTE.
Position Description
:
 
The Membership and Development Manager (M&DM) reports to the Chief Executiveand is responsible for all aspects of fundraising. The principal duties of the Membership and DevelopmentManager include:
In
administration
 
the M&DM will provide leadership in developing an annual “Membership,Development, and Communications Plan” and associated bu
dget and timeline.
 
In
membership development
the M&DM will design and implement a strategy to attract andacquire new members, retain existing members, create and implement a major gifts program, andbuild strong relationships with major donors.
In
foundation fundraising
the M&DM will work with program staff to prepare funding proposalstargeted to appropriate foundations.
In
communications
the M&DM will lead implementation of a communications plan.
In
events
the Membership and Development Manager will take a lead role together with the Chief Executive to envision, plan, and implement a fund raising event.
In
budget and finance
, the M&DM will create budgets and timelines, and set reasonable andattainable fundraising targets and milestones.
Location
: Monterey, CA
Compensation
: Salary commensurate with experience, $55,000-$60,000 to start. Currently, benefits arelimited to paid sick and vacation leave.
Qualifications
: A bachelor’s degree, at least three years experience, and a track record in nonprofit
 membership management and fundraising is required. The ideal candidate will have significant (minimum 3-5 years) experience in nonprofit fundraising and will have core competencies in membership development,writing, and cultivating relationships. The ideal candidate will have experience with grant writing. Theywill be personable, energetic, creative, well-organized, detail-oriented, independent, flexible, and hard-working. They will have a strong commitment to public interest work. The successful candidate will haveexcellent communication skills, a good sense of 
humor and the ability to function in a small office, highly
collaborative, team environment. Computer proficiency in a PC environment is a must; familiarities with thefollowing are required: fundraising database software, word processing, spreadsheet and budget management, emailand internet research. Familiarity with Monterey and local environmental issues are a plus.
