Independent Living means being in control of your own life, taking responsibility foryour actions, taking risks, and failing or succeeding on your own terms.
Independent Living Centers
Independent Living Centers (ILCs) are non-profit organizations run by people withdisabilities for people with disabilities. Core programs include information andreferral, peer counseling, individual and systems advocacy, and independent livingskills training. ILCs help individuals of all ages with all types of disability to obtainwhatever services they need to preserve their right to choose and to fully andequally participate in society.
NYSILC and NYAIL
TheNew York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC)is a not-for-profit, non-governmental, consumer controlled organization. The council is composed of 27appointees from around the state, a majority of whom have disabilities,representing diverse cultures and needs in the state. NYSILC is responsible for thedevelopment, implementation and monitoring of the 3-year Statewide Plan forIndependent Living (SPIL).New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL)is a membership organizationrepresenting Independent Living Centers throughout the state. NYAIL strengthenslocal ILCs, serves as the foundation of a strong statewide network, and is a leader inthe civil rights movement for all people with disabilities.2010 NYAIL Conference: Every day, people with disabilities are confronted withbarriers to accessing the community-based services and supports they choose.Removing these barriers presents an extraordinary challenge to individuals andsystems. The solutions involving disability policy, programs, and practice, are oftencontroversial, both across service and other systems and within the disabilitycommunity. The conference is an opportunity for discussion, debate, education, andcollaboration on these critical issues.
