Find out how your body processes food.
Mouth
The teeth in your mouth areinvolved in the first stage ofdigestion. Teeth are used tobite and chew food, whichis then mixed with saliva.
Gullet
When you swallow your foodit travels from your mouth toyour stomach down throughyour gullet (oesophagus).
Stomach
Your stomach contains verystrong acid, which helps tobreak down your food as itchurns. The stomach has amucous lining to protect the stom-ach wall from the acid.Food can spend several hoursin your stomach. During thistime the food is turned into acreamy mixture called chyme.
Small Intestine
The chyme leaves your stomachand enters the small intestine. As the chyme passes throughthe small intestine the nutrientsare absorbed into the bloodstream. The chyme is pushed through thedigestive system by contractingmuscles, this is called peristalsis.
This is a picture taken insidethe intestine.
Large Intestine
After leaving the small intestine, the chyme enters the large intes-tine. As the chyme passesthrough the large intestine thewater is absorbed. The wasteproducts that are left are thenexcreted from the body throughthe rectum.
If you were to pull out your smalland large intestines, they wouldstretch for 9 metres. That’s nearlyas long as a double decker bus!
