Baseball and Cooperstown go together like a hand in glove (if you don't mind the pun.)Despite the fact that the game was not actually invented there, the town has a heritageof promoting the it. A trip to the area would be incomplete without a visit to at least oneof the baseball attractions.Cooperstown's major attraction is baseball tourism. Youth-league baseball, baseballhistory, the Hall of Fame Classic game, and the baseball-themed stores that line thestreets make up most of the town.National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is probably the most notable attraction intown. This award-winning and historic establishment is most notable for its yearlytradition of inducting baseball greats into "The Hall." From Ty Cobb in 1956 to RobertoAlomar in 2011, The Baseball Hall of Fame has been honoring great players, managers,umps, executives and others who've made the game what it is today. The Hall isbefittingly situated right on Main St.In recent years, the "Hall of Fame Classic" is played each Father's Day. Hall of Famers,as well as other Major League Players take part in this exhibition game. It's held atAbner Doubleday Field, where the "Hall of Fame Game" used to be held. The "Hall ofFame" game was originally played between old-timers, and eventually became a gameof squads that were made up from the major leagues. It had traditionally been heldduring the Induction Weekend for the Hall of Fame.Cooperstown Dreams Park is another draw to Cooperstown - it's motto is "WhereBaseball Present Meets the Traditional Values of Baseball Past"™. The park is thepremier destination for young players. The Dreams Park is the home of the NationalAmerican Tournament of Champions , which is open to players 12-years old andyounger. It also houses the "American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.Although it's actually located in the town of Oneonta, not far from Cooperstown,Cooperstown Baseball World gives young players from 10 to 16 years of age anopportunity to compete in tournaments. Damaschke field, a historic baseball park whereBabe Ruth once played, is home to it's games, as well as the baseball fields of OneontaState College. Currently home to the Detroit Tigers Class A Team, Damaschke field waspreviously the home to the NY Yankees Class A team.On the other side of Oneonta, you'll find Cooperstown All-Star Village - the home ofYouth Travel Baseball for children 12 to 16.Cooperstown's main streets, as well as the outskirts, are lined with establishments witha baseball theme. Here you can find The Cooperstown Bat cCompany, where you canwatch your own bat being made. Baseball card and memorabilia shops abound, as wellas restaurants and other places to eat that are owned by or dedicated to formerbaseball players.
