Surprised to hear this about Brecht. I remember reading some small portion of his HUAC testimony and my impression was that he gave them a runaround and exposed them as fools, but that must have been a brief extract from a longer testimony.
Yes, Brecht never forgave himself for a failure in courage before the HUAC. Sad, since he reinvented theatre for all time!
