Lowering Your Refrigeration Costs
Protocol:
Numerous trials have been conducted to verifyenergy savings that can be achieved by installing a
POWERCUBE
to the air sensors monitoringtemperature inside refrigeration units. Each trial ran for a period of two weeks. Duringthe first week of each trial, the refrigeration unit wascontrolling temperature as normal, based upon air temperature. Data loggers were installed on therefrigeration units, capturing benchmark data of kilowatt-hours (kWh) used and the number of compressor start/stop cycles. Then, a
POWERCUBE
was installed on the air sensors and the same datawas captured for the second week. For each trial period, the temperature of the food, the food simulant itself (
POWERCUBE
), andcirculating air in each refrigeration unit weremeasured to ensure that there was significant changein total number of kilowatts consumed as well as areduction in compressor start/stop cycles, all whilemaintaining food at a constant temperature andensuring food safety.
Results In Each Case:
1. Food temperature remained within food safetyguidelines after the
POWERCUBE
was installed.2. The
POWERCUBE
food simulant providedtemperature readings equivalent to that of thefood.3. Energy savings between 13% and 33% wereobserved.
Conclusion:
Installing a
POWERCUBE
will reduce theelectricity consumption of most commercialrefrigeration units by up to 33% without changingthe storage temperature of the food, and alwaysensuring food safety.
The following data reports highlight trials with major companies, who use commercial refrigeration in their daily businesses. These trials were conducted in a variety of time durations from two to fourteen days. In allcases, significant savings were experienced in energy consumption after the
POWERCUBE
was installed.

T
hermal inertia is a term we seldomif ever hear about. Yet, thermalinertia is constantly operating in thebackground of our lives everywhere, but especially so with regard torefrigeration.Thermal Inertia simply refers tothe tenancy of something to remain atits current temperature. Since food isdenser than air, it has greater thermalinertia than air and is affected muchless by external forces of change.Air temperature can go “up anddown like a yo yo”, while foodtemperature, comparatively, willchange very slowly. Therefore, whenrefrigerated air is circulated aroundfood, it has a somewhat modest effecton the food, even though the air itself is much colder. So, as the thermostat senses lots of changes in air temperature, it signalsfor lots of on/off cycling of thecompressor. This truly is a “tailwagging the dog” scenario. In fact, if the thermostat were to monitor thefood instead of the air, it would signalfar fewer on/off cycles and providetrue, more substantive cooling of foodwith the enhancement of longer on/off cycle times.Longer on-cycles have a morepositive effect on food because theyallow the denser-than-air food to

temperature change. And once the cooling change has beenretained by the food, it’s thermal inertiagives it the ability to remain relativelytemperature constant. This provides for longer off-cycles.So, when thermostats measure
food
temperature and not
air
temperature, the cycles are longer and more relevantin terms of effective results. Therefore,it’s no coincidence that total run-time isgreatly reduced, because the system isnow

enables longer andfewer run times, which have thepositive effect of generating a netcolder food temperature with lessenergy. This means the “set point” of the thermostat can actually be raised while thedesired, optimal, safe food temperature is stillmaintained. Energy savings result from the higher set-point setting, overall reduced run-times, andreduced cycle frequency.Test and monitoring were conducted on amedium-sized walk-in over five days. The savingsspreadsheet shown at the right reveals the results, which were averaged as one 24-hour period for simplification purposes.Power-consuming compressor starts arereduced by 66%, a dramatic factor that increases thelife of the compressor. This reduction percentage isapplied as an extension to the compressor lifetimeand is added in with the energy savings, which, together, provide a more realistic ROI.
