Introduction
Global presence – local solutions
With over 100 years o experience, SKF stands alone as a totalsolution provider or maximizing machine and plant productivity. With a reputation or quality, technological innovation andservice that spans the globe, SKF brings what no other vendorcan to the maintenance arena.Local SKF sales and service representatives and worldwidedistributors provide access to the range o SKF bearings, maintenance products, lubricants and condition monitoringinstrumentation and sotware, independent o your location. In any kind o rotating machinery, rom huge rolling machines tothe smallest o motors, the bearing knows i there is a potentialproblem. As the primary interace between moving parts, thebearing is literally the diagnostic heart o the machine.Misalignment, unbalance, looseness and riction, are alltelegraphed through the bearing. Understanding theinormation coming rom this diagnostic “pulse” and thenapplying the latest and best technology to the problem is the keyto raising machine productivity and lowering operating costs. This standard product catalogue eatures a convenient collectiono monitoring tools that no industrial manuacturing plantshould be without.

Overall vibration and enveloped acceleration
Overview
A multi-parameter approach to condition monitoring providestwo dierent methods or monitoring machinery condition. This allows or early detection o specic machinery problemsand provides more ways to measure changes in machinerycondition. The SKF Vibration Pen
plus
is a multi-parameter vibrationmonitoring tool capable o measuring vibration (caused byrotational and structural problems like imbalance, misalignment, looseness, etc.), and capable o measuring vibration in higherrequencies (caused by rolling element bearing or gear meshproblems).Multi-parameter monitoring is the most thorough and eectivemethod or monitoring bearing and machinery condition. TheVibration Pen
plus
tool’s multi-parameter approach providesaccurate and reliable data upon which to base maintenancedecisions and promotes early detection, conrmation, andaccurate trending o bearing and machinery problems.
Functional description
When perorming measurements, the Vibration Pen
plus
tool’ssensor input signal is processed to produce two dierentmeasurements or each machinery POINT, Overall Vibrationand enveloped acceleration. The Vibration Pen
plus
tool’s LCD simultaneously displays bothmeasurement values. Depending on the type and locationo the machinery component being measured, either or bothreadings may be o interest.
Oveall vibation(ISO* 10816, Pat 1-6) Lo equenc vibation (10 H to1 kH)
Overall velocity vibration occurring in the 10 Hz to 1 kHzrequency band is considered the best operating parameteror judging rotational and structural problems likeimbalance, resonance, misalignment, looseness, and stressapplied to components. Many machinery problems may cause excessive overallvibration. Mechanical looseness, imbalance, sot oundation, misalignment, rotor bow, resonance, eccentricity, bad belts, orlost rotor vanes can all be measured with overall ISO* vibrationmeasurements.Measuring the overall vibration o a machine or component, orthe structure o a machine, and comparing the measured valueto the machine’s normal value (or to ISO 10816 standards)indicates machinery health and condition changes.
Note: Overall vibration is not an indicator o bearing or gear mesh problemsthat typically occur in higher requency ranges.
Enveloped acceleationBeaing/gea mesh equenc vibation (10 kH to 30 kH)
Enveloped acceleration measurements measure the highrequency repetitive vibration signals typically caused bybearing and gear mesh problems.Envelope detection is very useul in rolling element bearing andgear mesh analysis where a low amplitude, repetitive vibrationsignal may be hidden by the machine’s rotational and structuralvibration noise.
