Overall vibration and enveloped acceleration
Overview
A multi-parameter approach to condition monitoring providestwo dierent methods or monitoring machinery condition. This allows or early detection o specic machinery problemsand provides more ways to measure changes in machinerycondition. The SKF Vibration Pen
plus
is a multi-parameter vibrationmonitoring tool capable o measuring vibration (caused byrotational and structural problems like imbalance, misalignment, looseness, etc.), and capable o measuring vibration in higherrequencies (caused by rolling element bearing or gear meshproblems).Multi-parameter monitoring is the most thorough and eectivemethod or monitoring bearing and machinery condition. TheVibration Pen
plus
tool’s multi-parameter approach providesaccurate and reliable data upon which to base maintenancedecisions and promotes early detection, conrmation, andaccurate trending o bearing and machinery problems.
Functional description
When perorming measurements, the Vibration Pen
plus
tool’ssensor input signal is processed to produce two dierentmeasurements or each machinery POINT, Overall Vibrationand enveloped acceleration. The Vibration Pen
plus
tool’s LCD simultaneously displays bothmeasurement values. Depending on the type and locationo the machinery component being measured, either or bothreadings may be o interest.
Oveall vibation(ISO* 10816, Pat 1-6) Lo equenc vibation (10 H to1 kH)
Overall velocity vibration occurring in the 10 Hz to 1 kHzrequency band is considered the best operating parameteror judging rotational and structural problems likeimbalance, resonance, misalignment, looseness, and stressapplied to components. Many machinery problems may cause excessive overallvibration. Mechanical looseness, imbalance, sot oundation, misalignment, rotor bow, resonance, eccentricity, bad belts, orlost rotor vanes can all be measured with overall ISO* vibrationmeasurements.Measuring the overall vibration o a machine or component, orthe structure o a machine, and comparing the measured valueto the machine’s normal value (or to ISO 10816 standards)indicates machinery health and condition changes.
Note: Overall vibration is not an indicator o bearing or gear mesh problemsthat typically occur in higher requency ranges.
Enveloped acceleationBeaing/gea mesh equenc vibation (10 kH to 30 kH)
Enveloped acceleration measurements measure the highrequency repetitive vibration signals typically caused bybearing and gear mesh problems.Envelope detection is very useul in rolling element bearing andgear mesh analysis where a low amplitude, repetitive vibrationsignal may be hidden by the machine’s rotational and structuralvibration noise.
