Grubs are beetle larvae that love to feed on turf roots. Since they existunderground, they’re able to go undetected as they weaken your lawn’s rootsystem. In most cases, homeowners don’t know grubs are present untilsymptoms appear.
What Are the Symptoms?
The most common signs of a grub infestation are irregular brown patchesthroughout the turf, and grass that feels spongy when you walk across it. If younotice animals such as skunks, raccoons and birds digging through your turf, they may be looking for grubs to eat. In severe infestations, sod can be rolled upeasily (like a loose carpet) due to root destruction.
How Are Lawns reated?
Insecticides designed especially for grub control are very effective, and theywon’t harm the grass, other plants or you. If an inspection of your lawn showsthat grubs are present, an application should be made as soon as possible tokeep damage to a minimum. For more information, give Davey a call today. There’s no denying the need forregular fertilization and weed control inmaintaining a thick, green, beautiful lawn.Davey provides both of these essentialservices, and we’ll be happy to schedulethem for you if we haven’t already. But there’s one other important practicethat’s often overlooked: aerification.Aerification removes thousands of soilcores from your lawn and deposits themabove the thatch layer. It sounds simple, but as soon as aerification is completed, good things start happening to your lawnand continue for months afterwards.
What’s So Good About It?
The first immediate benefit of aerificationis the creation of tiny pockets in yourlawn to catch and hold air, water andfertilizer. Grass roots grow towards thesepockets, getting fuller and thicker on theway. Then, as the soil cores dissolveduring rainfall and irrigation, they mix withthe thatch layer and help it decompose. This prevents a thick layer of thatch fromforming over your lawn (more than ½"can prevent air, water and fertilizer fromreaching the soil). The important finalresult of aerification is a lawn that isthicker, greener, and holds up to hot anddry weather better than before. To schedule aerification for your lawn, orfor more information on any of the lawncare services we have to offer, feel freeto give us a call.

Summer is here, and all around ustrees and shrubs are now leafed out. With a full set of foliage, you wouldexpect your landscape plants to looktheir best this time of year…and mostof them do. However, as you walkaround your property, you may noticesome that look better than others. In the thick of the growing season, itbecomes more obvious which trees andshrubs are overgrown. Lighting fixtures, walkways, address markers and eventhe view from your living room windowmight be obscured by wayward branchesand foliage. In cases like these, Daveycan provide clearance pruning to keeptrees and shrubs in bounds.Dead, diseased, weakened or damagedbranches might also be present, andthey can stick out like a sore thumbagainst the beauty of a leafed-out treeor shrub. Besides detracting from yourlandscape’s looks, these branchescould fall and cause injury or propertydamage. This scenario becomes evenmore likely when a windy summer stormpasses through your neighborhood. Bypruning away such branches, Davey canmake your property safer while improvingthe aesthetics of your trees and shrubs. If any of your landscape plants looklike they could use a trim, give Davey acall. We’ve been providing high-quality,expert pruning services for over 120years, and we’ll be happy to help.Fertilizer and water can go a long waytowards helping your trees and shrubsstand up to summer’s hot, dry weather. But if they don’t make it to the rootsystem, they aren’t going to do yourplants much good. That’s wheredeep-root fertilization and deep-rootwatering* come in handy. With
deep-root fertilization
, we’ll injectour patented Arbor Green®
PRO
fertilizerdirectly into the root zone for maximumresults. Arbor Green®
PRO
has aslow-release formulation and a low saltindex, so nutrients will be deliveredvery efficiently without burning delicatefeeder roots. With
deep-root watering
, water can bedelivered directly to the roots at roughly12" below ground level. That way, lesswater will be lost through evaporationfrom the top layer of soil, and more willbe absorbed by the root system.Call Davey to learn more about thesebeneficial practices today.
*Deep-root watering may not be easible i watering restrictions are in place. I they are, Davey encourages you to ollow your city/county guidelinesor water conservation, watering your trees and shrubs whenever you can.
