Barbados Budgetary Proposal 2010 Addendum
NO INDICATION was given as to the impact yesterday’s Budgetary measures would have on inflation in Barbados. This is according to Tax Expert, Charles Tibbits in a response to the Budget of finance Minister, Christopher Sinckler. Tibbits of Tax and Consultancy Services Limited, said that the Budget which contained the largest revenue raising measures ever done in Barbados, will adjust the shopping patterns of Barbadians. VAT has been increased from 15 per cent to 17.5 per cent, and Government hopes to raise $124 million in a full year from the higher VAT. He said that in the 2010/2011 estimates of revenue and expenditure presented to Parliament earlier this year the Government estimated that VAT revenue for the 2010/2011 period would be $724.2 million. STUDENTS who do not complete their studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in the stipulated time could find themselves cut off from Government support.

Barbadians were yesterday administered one of the most bitter doses of economic medicine since the 1991 crisis by new Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler. Levying broad-based increases in taxes and user-fees, while at the same time offering significant support to several business sectors to help keep people employed and to pull the country from its economic hole, Sinckler said the aim was to reduce the fiscal deficit which balloned from $396.9 million in 2008/2009 to $712.9 million in 2009/2010.
