THE EASTER STORYA Closer Look at its Spiritual Significance
Written by David Allen Rivera (2001)A lot of people think that the Bible is just a big history book, but we are beginning torealize that it is more– much more. When you read the Gospel of John, there are details there, which are not found in the other three Gospels, and for that reason, it is known as the"Supplemental Gospel."In the Garden of Eden, we find that Satan was already in existence; yet in the 28thchapter of Ezekiel, we find that he was an angel that oversaw the earth. Well, when was this? The best case scenario we have, is that it was the period between the first and second verses of the first chapter of Genesis."In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God movedupon the face of the waters."The second verse reveals that there was a world, and water; and clearly indicates thatthis could not refer to the original creation. In fact, Psalm 104, which parallels the 6-day"creation" labels it as a "renewal" in verse 30. Jeremiah 4:23-26 talks about men, birds andcities prior to the Earth being without form. You can also find a reference to this time in 2 Peter 3:5-6. God told Adam and Eve (Genesis 1:28) to "replenish," (Hebrew word
male
, Strong's #4390) the earth, just as He told Noah and his sons in Genesis 9:1.

Besides the informationabout Lucifer in the 28th chapter of Ezekiel, there really isn't anything else in the Bible whichoffers any information about this period in Earth's history. The reason for that, is that it hasnothing to do with us, and has no bearing on our salvation.According to 2 Timothy 3:16–"All scripture is given by inspiration of God."The ApostleJohn was very instrumental in letting the early Church know which books were the divinelyinspired writings, as opposed to many apocryphal books, which may shed some historical light, but could also be inaccurate and contain false doctrine. He wrote in Revelation 22:18-19–"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If anyman shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written inthis book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy,God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from thethings which are written in this book."Proponents of the King James Version of the Bible often use this passage to bolster their arguments, saying that it refers to the entire Bible. That is open to debate, because inRevelation 1:11, the documentation of his visions were referred to as a "book." The book of Revelation is a very deep, symbolic book, and for anyone to interpret what they think it says, risks the chance of tainting its spiritual message. In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus said:"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the

2prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earthpass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."Jesus said than even the tiniest notation was not going to be touched, because as Hetold the disciples when He opened up their understanding of the Scriptures, there were things inthe Law of Moses, the Psalms, and the writings of the Prophets concerning Him. And indeed,we are finding out that references to Messiah Jesus appear throughout the Old Testament inmany ways. The warning not to change anything goes far beyond the correctness of a particular Bibleversion. It's about keeping intact the spiritual fingerprint and message that God has placed onHis Word. The Gospel of John starts out–"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was withGod, and the Word was God."This harkens back to Genesis 1:1–"In the beginning God createdthe heaven and the earth."The "Word" was Jesus, and the "beginning" was a new spiritual beginning. The lastrecorded Jewish history was in the book of Nehemiah, and from that time, till the arrival of Jesus, was 400 years– known as the "silent years." This beginning is also echoed in a concepttaught by Pastor Bill Anderson (of Bill Anderson Ministries International). God commandedAdam and Eve and Noah to be "fruitful and multiply," and to accomplish that, He gave themseed to replenish, the authority to subdue, and a dominion to rule over. The new spiritualbeginning that Jesus brought also operated under this same concept. The seed is who Jesusplanted to begin growing the church, the authority was the power of His blood through His deathon the cross, and dominion was the world that Jesus commanded His disciples to take theGospel to.When we go to the 2nd chapter of John, and the wedding at Cana, we find the firstrecorded miracle of Jesus, where He turned water into wine. And it wasn't just "wine," but "goodwine." For years it has been debated why Jesus did this. In fact, in a book called
Holy Blood,Holy Grail
, the authors theorized that the role of Mary, his mother, took in asking Him to performthis miracle, seemed to be one of a hostess; and they believed that in John 2:9-10, that theGovernor of the feast, in addressing the "bridegroom" about how good the wine was, wasactually talking to Jesus. They believe that this was Jesus' wedding, and that He married MaryMagdalene.

Obviously, as Christians, we know this was not the case. Jesus chose to perform thismiracle, at this time, because it was a symbolic representation of the new beginning, that Jesuswas the "new wine," and that there was a move from the old covenant to the new covenant (theOld Testament to the New Testament). In the Scriptures, when the Bible relates a story or event that seems unusual, or difficultto understand, it's guaranteed to be something that has spiritual significance.Even though God condemns child sacrifice, He told Abraham to take his son Isaac toMount Moriah to offer him as a burnt offering (Genesis 22:1-18). Abraham maintained, while onthe way, that God would provide a lamb. And, as you know, Abraham was obedient, and anangel prevented him from taking his son's life, and provided a substitutionary lamb as asacrifice. Here we find a prophetic story unfolding, whose purpose is of a spiritual nature. It isspiritual, because you could never understand it in the natural.Revelation 2:29 says:"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto thechurches."And Romans 8:1 tells us that we are to"walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."

3We can't just read what the Bible says on the surface by looking at it with our natural eyes. Wehave to read with our spiritual eyes, to see the spiritual significance of what God wants us tounderstand. You see, when Jesus taught from the Scriptures, He brought forth His ownteachings, taught by example, used prophecy, used parables, and He taught by acting out insymbolic representation. In the 14th chapter of Matthew, we find the story of Peter walking on the water– for ashort time. He was okay as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, but when he looked around andsaw the wind and the waves, he began to be afraid, and sank. When they got into the boat, theBible says that "the wind ceased." In our natural mind, we can't fathom being able to walk onwater, even though it did happen. But when we read this with spiritual eyes, and with the mind of Christ, we can see that Jesus was teaching a spiritual concept of dwelling in safety, when wekeep our eyes on Him.Now, getting back to the Book of John, in Chapters 20 and 21, we see more resurrectionfacts and details than in the other Gospels. In Matthew, Mark and Luke, we see eventspresented with a broad stroke, but in John, we are given details not found in other accounts, thatseemingly add nothing to the narrative. When Mary Magdalene goes back to tell the disciples that Jesus had risen from the dead,Luke wrote that Peter ran down to the sepulchre; but John writes that both He and Peter bothran to the sepulchre. But John added the fact that he outran Peter. Of course– nothing wrongwith a little gloating, after all, it is his book. Remember, it was John who wrote four times that Hewas the disciple who Jesus loved. Now, here we have John winning the race to the tomb, and looking in first; however, itwas actually Peter that went in first to see that the head covering was laying separately from theclothing. The original Greek language seems to indicate that when Jesus arose, he passedthrough His clothing without disturbing them. The fact that they were still there indicated that Hisbody was not stolen, because thieves would not have carried around a naked body; and also, had graverobbers broken in, they would have taken the grave clothing. After Peter saw this, then John went in. Afterwards, Peter and John went home, but Mary remained, and saw twoangels, one at the head, and one at the foot, where the body of Jesus laid. Mark writes thatwhen the women first saw the empty sepulchre, there was an angel sitting inside on the "right"side. There is a reason that this location is given.Mark also mentions that Mary Magdalene was the first to see the risen Savior, but it isJohn that gives us the details of the two angels in the sepulchre– one on the right, and one onthe left. The reason this fact is so important is that it illustrates a concept of spiritualinterpretation called "Twice Speak." This concept has come under fire for some of its extremeand unscriptural interpretation, however, in its purest form, I believe it has some credibility. In Job 33:14, it says:"For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not."The"Secret of God" in Job 15:8 is that when God speaks once, this is the type, how it played out thefirst time, which is always an "imperfect incomplete representation of a bigger truth." When Godspeaks twice, this is the anti-type, or how it will play the 2nd time. The type changing to the anti-type is teaching last day prophetic truths. One primary example of this, are the prophecies inDaniel, which are duplicated, and have long been accepted to not only be prophecies for thattime, but also refer to the Antichrist of last day prophecy.
3
Things are duplicated for a reason. When a word or phrase is duplicated, it signifies thatit is very spiritually significant. For example, 25 times in the book of John, Jesus uses the term,
