He accepted his first head coaching position in 1981 at Southwestern College, leading the team to win the Sunflower Bowl and achieve a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title. He subsequently contributed as the Head Coach for Pittsburg State University from 1985 to 1989, The University of New Mexico from 1992 to 1997, Texas Christian University from 1998 to 2000, The University of Alabama from 2001 to 2002, and Texas A&M University from 2003 to 2007.
Currently, Dennis Franchione leads the football team at Texas State University–San Marcos. He joined the Texas State program in January 2011, signing a five-year contract. Over the course of his career, Dennis Franchione has led collegiate teams to win eight conference championships and one divisional crown. Dennis Franchione also holds professional experience as a sports broadcaster, most recently serving as a commentator for ESPN Radio.
Educated at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, Dennis Franchione completed his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1973. Prior to establishing his career as a collegiate football coach, he gained experience leading players at Mulvane High School and Peabody-Burns High School. He achieved his initial college-level position in 1978, joining Kansas State University as an Assistant Coach. Dennis Franchione maintains membership in the American Football Coaches Association. Recognized by his alma mater for his career successes, he earned an Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award.view less
