ECO Living Programme @Lorong Lew LianAudit 5 (Energy/ Water)

Overview
ECO Singapore is organising an ECO Living Programme for blocks 1 to 8at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone ‘B’Residents’ Committee (RC) with volunteers from Starbucks.ECO Living Programme is a community grassroots programme that aimsto relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bitfor the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and wasteaudits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas forimprovement.This audit was the fourth one for Lorong Lew Lian and focused on thetheme of “energy and water”.
Objectives

To assess the utilities cost of water heater, washing machine andthermo-pot
•
 
To impress upon residents on the need to conserve energy andwater as well as the secondary benefits

To share energy and water-saving tips
Overview of Audit 5
A representative from ECO Singapore arrived at 8 am to prepare thenecessary logistics at the Community Hall near block 5.15 enthusiastic volunteers, including 12 from Starbucks participated inthis audit. At 9.15am, the volunteers did a short self-introduction andthen were told to divide into pairs. Then the volunteers collected theirlogistics. Each pair would get a clipboard containing the resident infosheets, audit checklists, volunteer infosheet and star stickers.

A briefing was conducted to run through with thevolunteers the procedure to follow when visiting theresidents.At 9.45am, the volunteers then fanned out to the various blocks.The volunteers were tasked to audit the residents’ usage of washingmachine, water heater and thermo-pot. Using a simple formula, theycould calculate roughly how much the resident was paying for usage ofthese appliances through their energy and water bills. The volunteersshared with them energy and water-saving tips as well as the benefitsassociated with such practices.By 11.45am, all the volunteers had completed their allocated units andreturned to the Community Hall.After the logistics were collected, a debrief was conducted for eachindividual group. At 12.30pm, the programme officially ended.
Results
A total of 45 households went through the audit. 24 residents were notat home.
Feedback
Although the number of volunteers were small, but they were veryenthusiastic. Most had done the audit before and even the new onescould pick it up easily and enjoyed interacting with the residents!Many of the volunteers weresurprised to learn how costlyusing the water heater is,and that front-loaders aremore energy and waterefficient than top-loaders. Avolunteer shared thatleaving the front-loader dooropen after use wouldeliminate the mould problem
