3,663,738 patients treated
: a number that sums up EMERGENCY’s rst 15 years o work. But this number alone is not enough to dene our activity: it is also necessary to explain where- in teen dierent countries, all ravaged by war and poverty - and how we treated thesepeople, with passion and proessionalism, building and managing Hospitals, Surgical Centresand Paediatric Centres, First Aid Posts, Rehabilitation Centres…Why we treated them, however, needs no explanations: simply, these people needed to betreated. The meaning o our doctors’ and nurses’ work around the globe is all here: to treatthose who suer, without distinctions o ethnicity, ideology, gender, belies, religion. In March 2009 we opened a new Paediatric Centre in the capital city o the Central AricanRepublic, Bangui: it has already given ree healthcare to 15,306 children. We’ve worked long and hard toward the building o the Arican Network o Medical Excellence(ANME). It is an ambitious project aimed at ostering cooperation between dierent countriesin the continent, toward the building o healthcare acilities o a very high standard ollowingthe model o the
Salam
Centre or Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan: like the
Salam
Centre, all these acilities will have a regional vocation. Paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, oncology, traumatology are only a ew o the medical elds covered by this project, which is meaningul above and beyond its clinical importance. We believe that being able to have representatives o dierent countries - sometimes in openconfict with one another - sitting at the same table, working on a common goal which isthe health o the populations, is a beautiul result, rom a cultural and social point o view.New projects will begin in the rst ew months o 2010, like the Paediatric Centre in Nyala,South Darur. And our engagement in Italy is growing, as well: building upon the positiveexperience o the Clinic in Palermo, we are working to open other healthcare acilitiesdedicated to the migrant population and to those in need.As always, all o this is possible only through the support o thousands o volunteersand riends like you: don’t hold it back.
