A phenomenally wealthy Indian who excites hostility and suspicionis an unusual creature, a fish that has managed to muddy the waters itswims in. The glow o admiration lighting up the rich and the suc-cessul disperses beore it reaches him, hinting that things have gonewrong somewhere. It suggests that beneath the sleek coating o lux-ury, deep under the sheen o power, there is a ailure barely sensed bythe man who owns that ailure along with his expensive accoutre-ments. This was Arindam Chaudhuri’s situation when I first met himin 2007. He had achieved great wealth and prominence, partly byprojecting an image o himsel as wealthy and prominent. Yet some-where along the way he had also created the opposite efect, which – in spite o his best eforts – had given him a reputation as a raud,scamster and Johnny-come-lately.We’ll come to the question o rauds and scams later, but it is indis-putable that Arindam had arrived very quickly.
