SYNOPSIS:
This report documents the process of finding asolution for a pattern recognition system, withthe purpose of sorting fasteners. The partsinvolved in such a system have been analysed, yielding insights in image processing andpattern recognition. These parts being seg-mentation, feature extraction, classification, and separation of touching fasteners.Among the features selected, both scalingand light variant are present. If these arenot utilised, the fasteners cannot be correctlyclassified to the desired extend. In theclassification a Bayes classifier is employed, using the Mahalanobis measure of distance.Furthermore, the system is made capable of handling fasteners that touch. This is achievedby locating concavities and estimating separa-tion lines.Based on the results derived from the analy-sis, an implementation is made in MATLAB,to further enable testing of the methods found. These tests showed that an error rate less than20% could be achieved, even when input con-tains numerous touching fasteners.
