Governments and courts of countries worldwide,recognize the religious character of the Church of Scientology 
Introduction
S
ince 1954, when the rst Church o Scientology was ounded, the religionhas grown to approximately 10 million members and is present through itschurches, missions or groups in over 150 countries around the world.Wherever the church exists, it endeavours to register as some orm o non-protassociation with religious purposes, according to the laws o that country, with theexception o countries where such registration is not possible. The legal systemso each country oten dier signicantly. Some have ocial registries o religionswhere all groups are obliged to register and meet certain criteria. Others take theopposite view and specically prohibit keeping ocial lists o ‘accepted’ religionsconsidering that this is not a matter that alls within the jurisdiction o the State.Governments and courts o many dierent countries recognize the religious char-acter o Scientology. This booklet is intended to give some understanding o howScientology is seen in Europe and elsewhere around the world.
Europe

he majority o countries in the European Union do not have a religious reg-istry system within their legal ramework (or even a orm o ocial religiousrecognition). In those countries that do have a orm o registry procedure (in-cluding countries who are not part o the EU), Scientology has been recognizedas a religion in the ollowing - Sweden, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia andAlbania.The majority o States in the European Union have other orms o recognition. Inmany o these countries, Scientology has been recognized as a religion throughadministrative and judicial decisions, including decisions by the highest courtin the country. These decisions include the ollowing countries – Italy, Denmark,Austria, Germany, UK and Norway.

here are many other judicial, administrative and registry recognitions inother countries o the world too. Some examples are - USA, Australia, NewZealand, Canada, South Arica, Nepal, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Taiwan,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Venezuela, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Brazil, India, Philip-pines and Sri Lanka.
