 Dear Members of the School Board:We are writing to advocate for individual students to pursue his/her education in a supportivepublic school environment. We are members of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition,
apartnership of educators, community organizations, and safe school activists
who representthe fields of mental health, education (elementary, secondary, and higher), youth developmentand not-for-profit organizations.Our correspondence is generated out of concerns for student safety and we strongly believeyouth at your school should have the right to access an education in a Georgia public school thatis accepting and supportive of needs and identity development of trans youth. Although somelocal school districts in Georgia may not have policies specifically for addressing these needs, itis common practice in some areas of the state (Cobb County, Athens-Clarke County, etc.) andother areas of the country to create a supportive classroom and campus for all youth byincorporating the following:
 
Never penalize students for wearing clothes that are deemed to be to
o “girlish” or “boyish”
 
 
Ensure students are free from harassment from students, parents, staff or administrators,related to their gender expression
 
Use of pronouns or names consistent
with the student’s gender identity.
 Also, experts agree that the following are additional ways to make a school safer and genderaffirming:
 
Arrange for transgender awareness training for faculty, staff, and administration from aqualified trainer.
 
Incorporate positive information about transgender issues into the curricula.
 
Create gender-neutral restrooms. In addition to providing a safe space for gendernonconforming youth, this reduces acts of violence in general. However, a gendernonconforming youth should never be required to use a gender-neutral restroom, the
