Despite all of the amazing progress intechnology that graces the `Verse, good oldfashioned horses are still a mainstay of transportation on the Rim and Border planets, while still more of an entertainment on theCore Worlds, regardless of where they happento be, horses are still highly soughtcommodities. Most horses stay on the planetthey were born on, but the need to increasethe number of or to balance a herd, or toimprove breeding, results in a widespreadrequirement for horses to be moved betweenworlds. Appaloosa stock is still one of the mostpreferred breeds on the Rim due to theirability to endure the rougher living conditionsfound on most Rim planets and the transportof these hardy equines is a common sightthroughout the `Verse. Another commonfeature of the `Verse is a business transactionknown as speculative trading. The details canbe complex, but the gist of the operation is aninvestor or ship owner purchases a cargo onone planet and takes it to another with thehopes of selling the cargo for a profit on thesecond planet. Since all planets have someitems in surplus and shortages of others, ashrewd businessman can make enormousprofits while engaging in these types of transactions. However, since the ability tomake a profit is driven by knowing whichplanet needs what, out of date information canresult in arriving after another ship hasalready flooded the market with the samecommodity and that can result in losses asgreat as the profits that can be made, thusspeculative trading is not for the faint hearted.Still, the allure of huge returns on investmentskeeps the practice alive and thriving.
