IKS 2010 Public Report
2010 was the second of four years for IKS and saw four important transitions: from requirements to early prototypes; from the prototypes to the design of the Reference Architecture; from the architecture to the first implementation of the interactive knowledge stack, and finally to the early adoption of the IKS software through external CMS companies. In the first half of 2010, the extensive requirements capture process of the first year came to its close and designs for the IKS Reference Architecture as well as the first prototypes of IKS Components emerged. After a successful project review in April, we increased dissemination activities with an early adopters workshop in Salzburg, demonstrating the first of the IKS components to external CMS companies.

IKS Architecture - Work in Progress ----------------------------------- One of the main challenges of the IKS project is to provide a reference architecture for semantically enabled CMS. After one year of brainstorming, requirements engineering, and community workshops a first step towards an IKS reference architecture was made during a Stack Design Workshop from March 11-12 at the University of Paderborn, Germany. The results of this workshop and further thoughts from a software engineering perspective are now summarized in a work in progress document which addresses the IKS architecture. This first proposal shall serve as a basis for further and ongoing discussions on this topic – it is by no means the final solution! You are invited to have a look, share your opinion, provide new ideas, and become part of the IKS community. The objective of this deliverable is to provide an update on the status of IKS activities and initiatives aimed at supporting the liaisons of the IKS project with W3C and other standards bodies. In the first year of the project, many initiatives have started, and will continue during the next period together with other important ones that are planned. Both research and industrial partners have been active in this task and have started activities with authoritative standards (and other kind of) bodies such as OASIS, W3C, and Apache. It has to be noticed that Apache is a federation of open source projects, not a standard body. However, we report in this document the work conducted in the context of Apache because it involves projects that are often focussed on the implementation of standards being sometimes their reference implementations, hence relevant to standardization activities. The topic for the first workshop “Semantic requirements for the IKS Stack” was selected to feed the initial requirements gathering phase of the project. With the goals of the workshop to provide feedback on the state-of-the-art CMS technology platforms and trends towards the uptake of semantic technologies, it was decided to focus effort on attracting a broad range of CMS vendors rather than open source software development communities. The open invitation to the CMS vendor communities expressed not only the vision of IKS but was a “call to action” for the CMS development communities to influence the way IKS develops and to BE influenced by IKS, as well. The second IKS community workshop addressed the issue of semantic search especially in the area of content management systems. The theme of semantic search emerged from our first IKS workshop in May 2009 as one of the key areas where the project’s participants would like more information. The objective of this second workshop was therefore to provide a clear overview of the state of the art in WORKING semantic search systems, and a better understanding of what IKS should provide to make effective semantic search possible within existing CMS systems. All of the workshop presentations and product demos are available online at http://www.iks-project.eu/semantic-search-challenge-workshop-report. This deliverable is structured as follows. First, we introduce the IKS project and pose relevant research questions that the IKS benchmark model for CMSs must address. Then, related work on CMS benchmarks, semantic technologies and applications is discussed from which shortcomings of exiting benchmarks are derived and implications for the design of the IKS benchmark model are drawn. Afterwards, we present the IKS benchmark model for CMSs, which describes a study-driven and experiment-driven approach to compare CMSs. Consistent with the model, questionnaire items for the study targeted at IT executives of CMS customer and provider organizations and implementation tasks for the experiment targeted at CMS developers are provided. Finally, we conclude this deliverable by a summary and an outlook on the next steps within the IKS project. The horizontal industrial use case addresses the set of semantic enhancements provided by IKS that could be used by any CMS system, i.e. semantic enhancements that do not address a specific vertical business domain. In order to identify these requirements, we applied a requirements elicitation methodology that is grounded in software engineering processes.
