State the likely mechanism of action of the Crude OilTank fire
A
On Monday 23
rd
October 2006, at 2:40 p.m., a bolt of lightning struck a 30,000 cubic metresDegassing Tank in Petrotrin Trinmar Oil Station #37 located at Point Fortin Central, PointFortin. The Degassing Tank was used to separate oil from gas. Oil, which is heavier than gas, fellto the bottom of the degassing tank while the lighter element, the gas, was at the top. A ventingsystem allowed excessive gas to be vented through vent lines at top side of the tank. The bolt of lightning travelled down the conduit pipe of a gas level gauge protruding from theroof and discharged in the tank causing the combustible gases in the tank to ignite resulting in anexplosion. Although lightning rods were installed in the tank, they did not function properly. Thetank was also built under built under old tank regulations thus it did not have no automatic firesuppression system nor did it have any flame arrestors on the tank vents. The fires from the explosion lasted for two hours burning the tank and its surrounding piping.
