Born in Denmark, my family and I migrated to Australia in 1957 and moved to the small country town of Yallourn when my father, a marine engineer, obtained work there. After finishing secondary school, I left to attend Monash University in Melbourne, where I studied botany and genetics. At later points in time, I also obtained graduate diplomas in urban sociology and information technology from Swinburne University, in Melbourne.
