Botanical medicine is a mainstay of alternative treatment for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. Because millions of women experience these symptoms in the United States and because of their concerns about the potential risks of hormone replacement therapy (albeit less risk than most women fear), there is a significant opportunity to offer women botanical approaches to alleviate their vasomotor symptoms, insomnia, mood changes, and more. This review of the scientific research on botanical treatments for common climacteric symptoms offers the practitioner numerous options to help women manage their perimenopause and menopause.
