Hurricane Mitch Strikes the Caribbean
As Hurricane Mitch tore across Central America, the most deadlyAtlantic storm in two centuries left a trail of destruction in its wake.Passing through the Caribbean sea, Nicaragua, El Salvador, andGuatemala.Causing 19,000 deaths directly and over $8 billion of damage. Thehurricane formed during the 1998 season and was the most powerfulon record for that season. It was categorised a 5 status and left 2.7million homeless. It formed in the Caribbean just above the coast of South America from a tropical wave on October 22 and lasted tillNovember 5.When the storm hit it was stronger than expected and tore throughHonduras throwing up a 12m wave and 40cm of rain fell in thecapital, Tegucigalpa. Many of the major towns and their residents areno cut off and without water and food trying to rebuild their windswept houses.Hurricane Mitch was the strongest storm of the season and wasclassified a category 5 storm and was the devastating storm for twocenturies and destroyed buildings, towns and lively hoods. Thehurricane tore through central America passing through El Salvador,Honduras, Nicaragua, and the tip of Florida.
