Hurricane Mitch
was the most powerful hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season,with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph (285 km/h). The storm was the thirteenth tropicalstorm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the season. At the time, Hurricane Mitchwas the strongest Atlantic hurricane observed in the month of October.
Causes

The surface water of the Caribbean reached 27 degrees during the summer of 1998,and the air above the sea was very humid.

Air rise due to its heat creating a low pressure.
•
The system moved to the west, passing over warmer water and the air rose even faster and the pressure became even lower.
•
The winds reached 120 kph becoming a hurricane and it was named hurricane Mitch.
•
Air then came in much faster and the winds reached a climax of 290kph in October 26.
•
The hurricane reached land, and when it passed over central America, its winds beganto slow right down.
