Summer has hardly started and two moreevents lead off a busy June for the SDCAand its members. On June 6, the South Dakota CanoeAssociation partners with several other groups for a Missouri River cruise in theVermillion area. The event in some wayschristens the Missouri National RecreationalRiver Water Trail. Efforts are in place tomake the state’s largest river a water trail notunlike the Appalachian Trail that stretchesfrom Maine to Georgia. The Missouri River event begins at 8 a.m.on the Nebraska side of the Newcastle bridge. A shuttle will be provided, andoutfitter service Missouri River Expeditionswill have boats available for rent if you havea curious cousin or neighbor who wants to go
June starts busy with two events in one weekend
Pierre paddling adventure set for June 20 – bring your spray skirt
A few SDCA members from Pierre oftenmake the drive to attend East River cruises on the Big Sioux and elsewhere. On Saturday, June 20, the club will go seethem in our state’s capital. With a wide range of options on theMissouri River, along with Lake Oahe, thisfirst Pierre-based operation offers a greatchance to travel a bit and paddle somenew waters.Pat Wellner and John Adler are semi-famous for the year-round nature of thepaddling, and now they are hoping toshow off the river in their back yard.Since it is more than four hours fromSioux Falls to Pierre, logic would dictatesome car-pooling and trailer use for thistrip. Also, it would make the most sensefor paddlers to arrive the night beforesince the long trip to and from might notmake for a good window of paddling if we
but has no boat. The annual Lake Alvin paddling fair startsat 11 a.m. on June 7. The name of this gameis getting newcomers into boats, and theSDCA members in attendance will offer their kayaks and canoes to anyone who wants togive them a test-paddle. The event is free and participants should come to the lake from thesouthwest – it no-cost entry there – and beready to have some fun and learn a little. Both events should get June rolling alongin a strong fashion and offer chances toexplore waterways of the state. Last year, more than 30 people came out for the paddling fair and a number of new kayakersgot their questions answered with hands-onexperience. The Missouri River – if you havenot paddled it – is amazing, so get there.

set an afternoon event. These details can be developed as thedate approaches. But from reading Pat’sblog, the waters and scenery of the arealook good. The chance to spend sometime in the capital, and perhaps do atailraces run below the dam, where thewater moves rapidly, or to go face wavesin a spray skirt on the big lake, each is apossibility.Of course, it depends on turnout andthe desires of the group. The tentativeidea is to get those who make it together at Steamboat Park in Pierre between 10a.m. and noon on June 20. The rest, asthey say, is up to us.Visit Pat’s blog at this link for a look atwhat’s possible in Pierre. He has an e-mail link for other questions he mighthelp with. Let’s rock Pierre, SDCA.
