The Drink Tank Issue 266 garcia@computerhistory.org

Do I even need to say that’s a BriannaSpaceKat-Wu cover? Well, it is! As Indira Ghandionce said, ‘You can’t argue with girls and guns.’These have been some tough times, hence the general slow-down in production, but things are as they are, the exhibit I’ve beenworking on is just about complete, Cinequestshort lms are programmed, and Christmas iscome and gone. Maybe things weill get back to normal, or whatever in my life that roughlyequates to nromal. One thing that’s happened is that there’sa TAFF Race!In the space of a couple of days we wentfrom one candidate to four, and a good four atthat. I’m most impressed to see the names rep-resent a cross-section of folks, from con-runnersto fanzine fans to just plain awesome humans.Let me start by saying I’m a nominatorfor John The Rock Coxon. He’s informally the Journey Planet candidate, since James Baconand Claire Brialey are also nominators, alongwith Steve Stiles and Dave Langford. Y’all know Ilove John Coxon, and if you haven’t seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T54h1q_v0 , well, you should go and watch John and I hit SonomaCounty! I just noticed that he’s got four formerTAFF winners as nominees. There’s Liam Proven, one of those folksin fandom who is just awesome. He’s got somegood nominators, like Lloyd Penney, formerCUFF winner, James Shields, current GUFF ad-min, Bridget Bradshaw, former TAFF winner, Lil-lian Edwards, from TAFF winner, and Nic Farey,Mr. Fandom. Then there’s His Lordship, GrahamCharnock. He’s been around for ages and is areally good guy. He has a ton of videos on hisYouTube (cartiledge is the user name) and hasnominators like Sandra Bond, former TAFF win-ner Robert Lichtman, Mr. Rich Coad, fan artistmost awesome Harry Bell and Mike Meara.Good list. And nally there’s Paul Treadaway. I don’tremeber if I’ve met him or not, but I met somany folks on my two trips out that way thatfolks all run together! I totally didn’t remembermeeting Tony Keen. Toby Keen? Toby Keith? Theguy who writes the really good fanzine articles.Yeah, him. Anyhow, Paul’s got a good set of nomstoo, with DUFF winner Mike Glyer, TAFF win-ner Maureen Kincaid Speller, Vincent Docherty,America’s own Tim Illingworth and Fran Dowd.Good set of noms there too!So you see, this is gonna be a great racebecause there are four great nominees, and thesad part is three of them have to lose... unlessHold Over Funds wins, in which case all fourlose...I’ll be doing a TAFF issue right beforeCorFlu, so if you’re a TAFF person, write some-thing for it to go along with pieces from thecondidates themselves.Speaking of CorFlu, it’s coming up. Theroomnights are picking up, the reservations arecoming in, we’re still a small CorFlu so far, butI’m hoping more and more folks send in theirmemberships. It’s 70 bucks at the door, so buyingby February 5th is the best bet!I’m working on the programming and it’slooking pretty good. We’ve got a panel on TheLittle Men setup, a presentation on the Zine Ar-chives around the world, a Trivia quiz, an auction,The Dave Hicks Show and more! And, of course, a ConSuite.I’ll be slightly crazed the next few weeks, but what are you gonna do?So, this issue is a little bit of everything. It’s partly a look at 2010 with three differentfolks: Me, Judith Morel and Jay Lake. The threeof us had very different years, in very differentways, and one of the things I’ve always thoughtthe Drink Tank should be is a sampler of the hu-man experience. There’s also the National FilmRegistry announcement, which I love! And there’s Taral Wayne. I’m behind onhis articles. How many am I sitting on? Well, let’s just say that Harlan has fewer Last DangerousVisions pieces than I’ve got Taral pieces! And there’s gonna be some LoCs, whichis a bit odd after so long without them, no? Andthe the traditional stuff you expect from an issueof The Drink Tank. And, of course, Happy New Year, HappyKwaanza, Tip-Top Tet and all that!

Let’s start with a LoC on issue 263 from JohnPurcell!
You know there, roomie, BrianaSpaceKat Wu needs to create covers for otherfanzines, too. Don’t get me wrong; I love whatshe’s been doing for Drink Tank over the lastyear or so, but it is time to spread the wealtharound. I want a cover from her for AskanceReal Soon Now. Consider this an order.
Indeed she does! She did a great FIle 770cover not too long back, I think.
I have been suffering through - Imean, enjoying - your video book reviews onFacebook. An interesting concept, Chris. Youdo realize, don’t you, that this smacks almostof podcasting, or possibly transforming yourfanzine into a podcast? Is that your plan? Graba Fanzine Hugo by joining the opposition? Andhere I thought you were One Of Us. Oh, theshame of it... My Coru Quire roommate, onthe Dark Side....*puts paper bag over head*
They are most assuredly DramaticPresentiations, which meerly extends theempire as opposed to joining the Evil...
Regarding the Chilean miner’smiraculous survival story, I have to admit Ifollowed that nearly in its entirety. WhetherTaral wants to admit it or not (and I am surehe does), the fact that these 33 miners livedthrough this ordeal was sensational. To familymembers of those miners, I can see why theywould thank divine intervention for their lovedones coming out alive; I would be eternallygrateful also for the hard work of the rescuersand everyone involved in the rescue effort.Yes, it was very much an effort of professionals- mining engineers, etc. - but consideringthe duration of their literal undergroundinternment, this was possibly the number onefeel good story of 2010, a year that desperatelyneeded a story like this to restore our faith inhumanity.
It’s much better than that Pennsylvaniamine where they said that there weresurvivors and no one lived, or maybe it wasone guy made it out. The thing that’ll beinteresting is how they adjust to live on theoutside and the attention they’ve received.
Guidolon the Space Chicken is nowa graphic novel? Alright.....I can see this. Infact, that even makes sense. When Frank Wu’screation rst began to take ight, so to speak,mumble-dy-mumble years ago, I watched someof the early videos you guys made and enjoyedthe warped comic-book feel of the wholecreation. It really is a lot of fun, and I like thePythonesque monster foot smashing downon the car at the end. Nice touch. Frank doesunderstand that the projected completion dateof 2013 is a year after the end of the world, according to the Mayan calendar? Just thoughtI’d mention that.A fun issue, roomie. Enjoyed it muchly.Do another Real Soon Now, y’hear? All the best, John Purcell
I can’t wait to read it myself! As much as Iloved being the voice of the Giant SpaceChicken himself, and I frequently show itto folks who have never seen it, I think it’ll play good as a comic. As far as the world ending in 2012, I have my personal feelingsabout such. First, it’s obvious that SarahPalin will be elected President (making her the rst President I’d ever fantasize about)and that I’ll win the Hugo for Best Novelmere moments before the Earth ends in re!
