Lots os Steampunk happening inMarch, April and May. There were a bunch of events, the release of The Steampunk Bible,Makers Faire, a new Steampowered Railroadopened in Russia (and I’m hoping ot get anarticle on that!) and much much more. I’mexcited for the rest of the year, a new GailCarriger book and Steamcon and so muchmore, and the Hugo Nominations came outand James Bacon and I are both up for two: The Drink Tank for Best Fanzine (which weedit together) and each of us up for Best FanWriter. It’s not going to be easy to lose to James, a force of nature he is, but I’m willingto accept my beating.Speaking of Steampunk Literature, I’mso excited to see that we are much, much clos-er to the release of Gail Carriger’s next book,Heartless. It’s the fourth Parasol Protectoratenovel and I’m hyped! On the panel at NovaAlbion I did with Ay-leen and Gail saw Gailshowing off the cover to her 5th book, Time-less, and I was struck by the reference on thebaCover about ‘Undead Porcupines’. How amI to concentrate with that staring at me?I’m also excited to remind folks that GailCarriger is the Writer GoH at FenCon in Dal-las September 23rd - 25th. The Fan GoH ismy pal Steven H Silver, while Joe Bethancourtis the Music Guest of Honor, Vincent di Fate,Les Johnson is the Science Guest, and LouAnders is the Editor Guest of Honor. Goodline-up. I’ll be there as will some great folkslike Warren Buff, Guy Lillian, Brad W. Fos-ter and more. It’s also the DeepSouthCon for2011, so that’ll draw even more good folksfrom all over.Speaking of cons that I’ll be at which alsohave Guests of Honor that y’all Steampunks will be interested in, Westercon 64 is com-ing to the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose July4th Weekend! It’s got Patricia McKillup asthe Writer GoH (and I’ve read nothign of herstuff), but important to us is the fact that TheFoglios are the Artist GoHs! How awesome isthat? It’ll be great to have them as Guests inthe BArea once more, and I’m very pleasedto see that Phil and Kaija are up for anoth-er Hugo for Best Graphic Story. It’s a goodthing. It should be a fun con, especially withthe fact that I’m running the Fanzine Loungeduring the day which is always a good time.OK, let’s get on with teh reviewing andcon-going portion of our zine!

I got profoundly drunk. A former Locus-er lured me to my doom on Saturday evening.OK, maybe not lured, more like said was avail-able and I went to it. The lure of a beveragemade by a master while I was already 2 and ahalf sheets into the wind was the instrumentof my destruction. I am shocked Linda didnot stab me upon my return to the room. Inthe night, the rest of our room asleep deeply,or pretending to be so, and I had my stomachrevolt against the mere sips of water I’d takenin the hours since. These things happen, butit was only a moment, a speck of pain in a seaof amazing. That, and it proves that such encoun-ters with Our Blessed Lady of Late-Night Re-gurgitation are the wages of sin.Let’s talk about the con. I brought James Bacon with me. The man had flownin the night before from London and after westopped to get him his first taste of In-n-OutBurger, we slept and then ran into town topick a few things up. James, the Mad IrishMan living in Croydon, is always a good guyto have about, and as soon as we got to thecon, we instantly started running into peopleand chatting away.Sadly, this was the first time I’ve been to aSteampunk con that didn’t have The Steam-punk Scholar Mike Perschon. It was said, butas you can see from the photos that run withthese words, he was well-remembered!I ran into Nessa, one of my favorite peo-ple in the ‘I wish I had more time to sit downand get to know them’ category. James is con-stantly chatting, a brilliant mingler, far betterthan I am. We had a panel set-up for Fridayabout Fanzines. Sadly, no one showed up. There weren’t a lot of folks at programmingon Friday afternoon, so James and I headedto the con area, I handed out issues of ExHalland I really enjoyed introducing James to thegood folks of NorCal Steampunk. Instantly we met Pat Yulo and various others. It was agood intro to the con.Registration was a bit rough. It seemsthat the Nova Albion Crew seems to get them-selves a little bit better every time, and whilethis was a better registration that last year, for sure, it wasn’t optimal and it did take for-ever to get Linda’s badge. Still, I think they’llget around to making it a better registrationexperience. We got our room, and as has happened
