Hi, I'm Kate Walker and I live in Australia in a beautiful place by the sea. The gentle waters of a bay – an inlet from the Pacific Ocean – are mere steps from my door. I've been writing since 1977, and I love it. It's the only thing I want to do when I get out of bed in the morning. I'd write all day long if I could. Which is just as well, because I'm one of the slowest writers on the planet. It takes me an age to write anything. I use reams of paper and do dozens of drafts. Even a short story can take me years to complete. For most of my career I’ve written books for children, with the occasional Young Adult title thrown in. But from day one I always wanted to write truly tender stories like THE MAN WHO LOVED HIS WIFE, and tough stories like RORY, MY BROTHER (see Smashwords). My best known book is a YA novel PETER, about a 15 yr old boy who suspects he’s gay. It was one of the first gay books written for teenagers. I don’t choose my stories, they choose me. They come along and say, ‘Write me! Write me!’ and that’s what I do ... draft after draft … until they say, 'Alright, we can't wait any longer. You have to finish now.' Ultimately we all have to let go, don’t we?
