SHOCK SHOCK

SHOCK
is a serious medical conditionwhere the tissue perfusion isinsufficient to meet demand for oxygen and nutrients.

Pathophysiology
Precipitating cause of shock ↓ Circulating blood volume↓ Cardiac output
Hypotension and ↓ tissue perfusion
Baroreceptors stimulated↑ Sympathetic stimulationand cardiovascular system

Arteriolar constriction↑ Blood pressure
↑ Heart rate; ↑ contractility
↑ Cardiac outputVenous constriction↑ Venous returnAdequate blood volume, aneffective cardiac pump, and aneffective vasculature arenecessary to maintain blood pressure and tissue perfusion. When one of the threecomponents of this system begins to fail, the body is able tocompensate to increased work bythe other two. Whencompensatory mechanism can nolonger compensate for the failedsystem, body tissues areinadequate perfused and shock occurs. Without promptintervention, shock progresses, resulting in organ dysfunction, organ failure, and death.
