Following a Legend - A Business Coaching Story
Business coaching can mean facing issues the typical business consultant would not normally approach. This is an interesting example of one such case. Because of business coaching, you can make the hard parts - and the not so ordinary parts of your job easier. The real benefit comes with the degree of confidence that business coaching builds to run your business effectively.

I believe that business coaching can be a catalyst for positive change. Business coaching works by giving you the discipline to plan, confront issues as realities, and by instilling a sense of confidence to see tough complex situations through to a conclusion based on a plan. Business coaching just happens to make the hardest part of your job easier. If you are the type of person that likes to take on challenges using rational positive approaches, then you will enjoy working with a business coach. This particular story took place over a number of months and included a collaboration of several meetings with me as a business coach. The result for the business was tremendously positive and has led to growth and increased value for the employees and clients. With business coaching, you too can create these positive changes and opportunities. A real benefit of working with a business coach is getting out of the "echo chamber." Article on Ukranian Village neighborhood (Chicago) as it is now and how it probably looked 100 years ago. This was another of my life balance experiences, taking the time to remove myself from my normal focused routine and insert myself into a new environment while making pleasant observations. It sure is nice to lower the blood pressure once in awhile!

“WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON? - A Global Intelligence Briefing for CEOs” Speaker Herb Meyer is host and producer of The Siege of Western Civilization, a DVD outlining the threats to our security, our economy, and our culture that has become an international best-seller. During the Reagan Administration, Herb served as Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence and Vice Chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council. In these positions, he managed production of the U.S. National Intelligence Estimates and other top-secret projections for the President and his national security advisers. Herb is widely credited with being the first senior US Government official to forecast the collapse of the Soviet Union.—a forecast for which he later was awarded the U.S. National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal the Intelligence Community’s highest honor. His thought provoking presentation is non-partisan. Herb assumes that honorable people will disagree on how to improve our position in the world. He is committed to having the respectful conversation that produces shared solutions. Today, more than ever before, CEOs need to understand what is going on in the world. Key trends in politics, economics, populations and cultures have an impact on every business. To manage effectively, chief executives must know how these trends will affect their companies. In this presentation, Herb Meyer will talk about the national security, economic and cultural issues that dominate the news. Herb deals with facts rather than opinion.

We live in uncertain times, or do we? Management is different for CEOs when the harmonics, timing and political climates change. I recently embarked on a challenge to learn Duruflé, specifically his work Requiem. Last season I began singing in the baritone section with The Delray Beach Chorale. In April we will present a program featuring Requiem by Maurice Duruflé. Many of the expected neural cues you look for as a performer are not present in the work. I notice great similarity between learning Duruflé and the current challenges faced by CEOs that I coach. They are looking for familiar neural cues to drive decisions. They are searching for a feeling of confidence that is illusive in today’s business climate. Please comment and share ways in which you face challenge and uncertainty while running a business. This is the poem I wrote that I used in a series of discussions on "life balance." It was part of a previous post, and some friends asked that I post a copy of the poem on its own. Life balance is critical. Yet unlike so many other issues in one's business and professional life, there is no straightforward answer on how to achieve it. I hope this helps others to think about how they might find balance in their lives. -Les Deck

I thought I would share a story about a Business Coaching experience I was involved with. Something amazing always happens when we take ourselves out of the confines of running our businesses to gain elevation and perspective. Some common observations always emerge... One is that most report they hadn't realized how much the business was driving them, instead of them driving the business. I'm very much invested in the concept of business coaching since seeking this type of advice, and recommendation, played heavily in my own entrepreneurial and personal struggles. Today, as a Chair for Vistage International (Broward and Palm Beach Counties, Florida), my skills are being constantly reforged by the current uncertainties, and pressures faced by the many members in the CEO Peer Groups. We all benefit from the combined experiences of the members, myself included. The constant exposure to expert speakers and the current perspective they bring allows me to share these evolving views of what drives business and personal growth with the clients I provide Business Coaching services to. I really believe in the American work ethic. Even when faced with tremendous challenge, in typical fashion we never back down. If you have faced a similar challenge to the story I relate here, I would love to hear how you beat the odds, the steps you took, and what drove you to do it. Your experiences are valuable insight to others currently facing a challenge in business. -Les Deck

As a Vistage Chair for several CEO Peer Groups in Southern Florida (Broward and Palm Beach Counties) I often note that personal and professional growth is not a trajectory but an ever evolving set of experiences that build upon each other. Life Balance often emerges as a concern amongst the members of my CEO Peer Groups. Business professionals who feel like they are maintaining a Life Balance often report that they feel more productive, happier, and even healthier (alert, avoid colds & the flu, and have increased stamina). The topic most frequently emerges when goal setting is discussed. In August of 2009 I used the story and poem to encourage all members of my Vistage groups to make pilgrimages to their homes to seek the same kind, warm, grounding connections. Many of them have done so and have described the trips to me. What a great way to balance our lives of challenge and hard work. Thomas Wolfe was wrong! You can go home again.

As a Vistage Chair for several CEO Peer Groups in Southern Florida (Broward and Palm Beach Counties) I recently had the pleasure of receiving economic insights from Alan Beaulieu an economist and principal of the Institute for Trend Research. Alan came to Florida as speaker for my CEO Peer Groups in both Boca Raton and Palm Beach. We tried to arrange some warm sunny Florida weather for Alan but unfortunately he got to experience our recent cold snap! It was a packed two days full of business strategy, advice, and insights we often get from the best speakers who visit our CEO Groups. They are a key to strategic planning and the executive management of all of the CEO Group businesses. Alan specifically addressed our local economy here in Florida then moved on the nation and finally the global state of affairs. Unlike most economists, Alan Beaulieu is willing to make and live with predictions. He and his brother Brian have a 96% accuracy rate over the past 20 years. When they are off it has been by a few months or a few percentage points. Their predictions are based on several factors that are available to anyone via the internet. They have chosen factors that have a high correlation with economic growth rates for more than 100 years in the US and centuries if applied to Europe.
