The King’s Speech
 February 1, 2011
Your Majesty, you speak for the nation in thistime of war and you d-d-
don’t want to b
-b-blow it!This triumph of mind over tongue will make youroot for King George VI and his peculiar speechtherapist, Lionel Logue; the new Dr. Doolittle andEliza of film.
One Word Movie Review: GREAT
Some movies are born great, some achievegreatness and some have greatnessreluctantly thrust upon them.
The
 King’s Speech
belongs in the lastcategory, telling the tale of a reluctantroyal hiding behind his childhoodstammer only to take center stage laterin life at the precise moment of his
country’s finest hour. Growing up in
the age of wireless (radio), Kings nolonger can pass muster by looking regal andwaving to crowds. No, they have to talk to theirnation through the broadcast microphone and itis this fearsome object which opens the movie
and dominates the life of “Bertie”, the second
son of George V and ultimately the King of Britain during the Second World War.

The King’s Speech
starts in 1925 and ends in
1939, following the Duke of York’s painful
attempts to communicate with his subjects. Welearn of his troubled childhood and the roots of his stutter and journey with him towards hisultimate test, his speech to the worried nation
when war is declared against Hitler’s Germany. In the end, it is “only” a speech but it tests this
man to the very core of his being and together,we honestly root for him to overcome hisimpediment and deliver the justification for warto a weary nation still haunted from the horrorsof the First World War only twenty yearsearlier. This is a classic character study about a mandetermined to live on the fringe of power, deferring to others and content within hislimitations yet asked to step into the spotlightafter death and love clear the path before him.His speech impediment makes him less royal
and more commoner, much like his therapist’s
insistence on first names. We have aPygmalion story, between Bertie and Lionel(played by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush)where Lionel uses his experience treating WWIshell-shocked soldiers struck dumb by theirtrauma to teach Bertie how to overcome hisown personal war wounds inflicted during hischildhood in the trenches of Royal Family life.

Great review, thanks. I saw this film quite early and absolutely loved it! But then, I am British lol

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the film, even if not much actually happens, not even one car chase. Firth and Rush should have a street corner for admirers to gather around.

Good thing I nerded out in those 4th and 5th grade Oratorical contests. Totally prepared for this movie now. Let's get 'er, er, er done.

I really really need to see this movie before the Oscars!
