The Tree of Life
 February 10, 2012
Brad Pitt again, producing and actingas
brush cut
Brad, featuring theback of his head and horned-rimmedglasses usually worn by workersabout to go Postal! Cut to celestialbodies swimming through thetumultuous currents of life and youhave this allegorical albatross of amovie and Oscar Best PictureNominee.

The Tree of Life
has been billed as a
non-linear
story about the meaning of life, rippling through time and space in disjointedbits of memory and meaning. Brad Pitt is
cloning George Clooney’s career, even
producing/acting working withdirector/writer/auteur Terrence Malick. Malick paired upwith Clooney in
The Thin Red Line
back in 1998 andtook home Oscars for director and screenplay, so he hasthe creative credentials. This movie is his 30-years-in-the-making albatross on his back and it has finally takenflight.

It also has three of the “biggies” in the
Oscarnominations list, one for Malick, one for the picture andone for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki:
Best Picture: The Tree of Life,
Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad,Dede Gardner and Grant Hill, Producers
Achievement in Directing:
Terrence Malick
 Achievement in Cinematography:
Emmanuel Lubezki

So, given the non-typical story and understatedperformances by Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, does thismovie have a chance at Oscar gold?As you sort through the imagery of the cosmos, Texassuburbia, volcanos, dinosaurs and endless shots of buildings and trees glimmering in sunlight, you realizethis movie is all about the image; a visual odysseythrough the tragic balance between love and survivingloss. It is easy to understand the nomination of Lubezkifor cinematography, as light is used here for spectacularemotional resonance. If there is an Oscar tucked in thebranches of
The Tree of Life
, it is for Emmanuel and theCinematography statuette. As I watched the space montages of swirling galaxies andrippling cosmos, I was reminded of
 2001 a Space Odyssey
and, sure enough, Douglas Trumbull and Malick are oldfriends and Trumbull contributed to this film as a visualeffects consultant.
