Hugo
 February 19, 2012
Hugo has 11 Oscar Nominations, foreverything except acting, and it showson the screen. Beautiful to look at, butthe emotional ride is impersonal andcontrived to tug at the orphan withinus all, searching for understandingabout how the world ticks, usuallyagainst our best efforts.
 Like
The Artist
, another nominated picturewhich is about the early days of movies andis silent, Hugo waits a long time for the firstline of dialogue, preferring to use striking 3Dscenes and images to draw us into Paris of the1920s and the magic world of clocks andtrains and a mysterious automatron figure thatwrites when you wind it up and insert aspecial heart-shaped key.We first meet

So, after one too many thefts, Hugo meetsanother orphan, a girl who reads about adventures butnever experienced one until now.Together, they stay one step ahead of the authoritiesand re-unite her uncle Georges with his remarkablepast as a leading filmmaker of early cinema, beforeWWI. It is a simple story, told to the ticking of clocksand with a multitude of stereotypes and set scenesyou
ve seen many times before. The magic of
