Hip hop on the...GYM FLOOR!
A rainy GMA Sunday couldn’t wash out the excitement or hold back hundreds of music fans from flooding McKendree to see the third annual
Peanut Butter & Jelly Party
by Kevin Sparkman
The buzz surrounding a silly namedevent called
The
Peanut Butter & Jelly Party/Hip hop on the Rooftop
reached an all-time high with thethird annual version that occurredlast Sunday, April 19 at McKendreeUMC’s Christian Life Center.Even with the silly moniker, theevent’s creators
Syntax Records
of Lemon Grove, CA take the PB&JParty and Christian hip hop veryseriously. “I have intentionally
not
been inviting people to the eventthis year” says Syntax co-founder
Steve Trudeau
in response to myquestion about crowd control on theapprox. 350 standing-roomcapacity rooftop. “I just don’t wantto have to turn people away.”This year the event has reachedmore of a national audience thanever with
MySpace Music
jumpingon board for the second year as asponsor. Leading up to the event,MySpace users across the globewere greeted with a PB&J banner every time they logged on to thesite. (according to alexa.com,MySpace is consistently one of theTop-10 most visited websites in theworld)Other notable national sponsors thisyear included
Rockstar EnergyDrink
(2nd year providing over 1,500 drinks),
Gospel MusicAssociation
(2nd year sanctioningthe event),
Microsoft Corporation
(donated a Zune mp3 player to oneaudience member along with freemusic download cards for everyonein attendance), and Christianapparel company
Not Of ThisWorld
.In addition to the sponsorshipexposure,
CrossRockTV.com
broadcasted the event live on their website crtvlive.com. Whenspeaking with CRTV producersafter the event they mentioned thatit was one of their smoothest live broadcasts they have featured.Another improvement from the previous two year history of thePB&J Party was the audio andvisual production.
MaxxProductions
of Franklin, TNdonated all of the tour-qualitysound, lighting, and technicalaspects of the event including set-up and tear-down crew. This was anunbelievable blessing and really provided for a professionalatmosphere through and through.I believe the Lord was looking outfor McKendree this night. I wasextremely worried about not beingable to control the crowd number on the rooftop and He provided thesolution with an all-afternoondownpour that forced us into thegymnasium. All together, I think this event drew over 500 peopleinto our CLC facility, a crowd thatfor the first time in three years, stayed for the entire show. Therooftop simply would not be able tohandle a crowd this size, but our gym handled it beautifully - praiseGod!I am so thankful that we were ableto host this concert again atMcKendree. Even though it istechnically a Christian musicindustry event, Syntax and thischurch has been very intentional atmarketing the PB&J Party to musicfans in the Middle TN area that caneasily make it to the event. Thegoal is to expose the message of Christ to people who normallywouldn’t come to a church for amusic related event. I am inagreement with Steve and brother/Syntax co-founder
Tim Trudeau
who have modeled this eventaround the vehicle of hip hop musicand legitimizing it with householdnames like MySpace and Microsoftto bring people in to experienceJesus - even if that’s not what theywere expecting. There were two specific highlightssurrounding this event for me personally: 1) I was touched bySyntax artist
Kaboose
’s personaltestimony given at the New Wineservice that morning, and 2) all of the Syntax artists/employees thatcame to church Sunday morningcould not stop telling me how blessed they were by this church!Again, praise God! Oh, and 3)yummy peanut butter & jellysandwiches! :-)
