Being a staple in the Nashvillecommunity for such a long time andwith our centralized downtownlocation, we have a uniqueopportunity at McKendree to pluginto various local organizations thatexist for positive change for peoplein our society. In this issue of 
The Vine
 we will learn more about two suchorganizations and how you can useyour unique gifts to get involved.
Nashville Adult Literacy Council
The NALC needs one-on-onevolunteer tutors to help teachEnglish-speaking adults how to readand English to adult immigrants.They have had a large influx of learners due to the economy andneeds your help!
 
Volunteers sign upfor a 6 month minimumcommitment with a timecommitment of 3 hours per week.Volunteers will meet continuouslywith the same student and meetingtimes/locations are based upon youravailability. Volunteer tutors will bematched with an adult learner basedon schedule and locationpreferences. A one-day training isrequired and no teaching experienceis necessary, but you must be atleast 18 years of age.Please contact the Nashville AdultLiteracy Council at 615.298.8060 orinfo@nashvilleliteracy.org to RSVPfor training and for moreinformation.Continued on page 3.

 allows learners on our waiting list to call andschedule hour appointments for immediateinstruction while waiting for a full-time one-on-one tutor.
 
Currently there are over 40 people onthe waiting list!As a volunteer, you can sign up for as many or asfew hour time slots that fit your time scheduleevery month either at our Cohn Adult LearningCenter location in West Nashville or at ourAntioch location at 325 Rural Hill Rd. in Antioch,TN. A 2.5 hour training is required and noteaching experience is necessary, but you must beat least 18 years of age. If you attend or are a partof the McKendree fellowship and live near one of these locations, prayerfully consider volunteering!
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Founded in 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters is theoldest and largest youth mentoring organizationin the United States. Big Brothers Big Sisters isproven to improve children’s odds for succeedingin school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugsand alcohol, and breaking negative cycles. Locatedin Nashville and providing services to DavidsonCounty and the contiguous counties, BigBrothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee served2,250 children in 2008.Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking to partner withMcKendree for community events and is alsoseeking church members to mentor children.There are currently over 400 students on amentoring waiting list!Sandy Moore of BBBS will be stopping byMcKendree soon to educate us on how tobecome more involved with their organization,but don’t wait for an informal invitation! McKendree Church will once again hold a papertowel drive for Community Care Fellowship on
Sunday, August 23, 2009
. Please bringyour store-bought rolls of paper towels withyou to church on this date as we anticipatelining the back hallway of the church from floor-to-ceiling with paper towel donations!Your donations to CCF go a long way, check out some thestatistics of service from just May alone of this year:

Community Care Fellowship has provided 51,674 guest servicesand counting in just 2009 alone!McKendree has historically supported this ministry strongly -let’s continue in that tradition...bring your towels on the 23rd!
Worship on the Rooftop cancellation
McKendree Church apologizes to anyone who showed up for theWorship on the Rooftop event Sunday evening July 26, 2009. Themiddle school ministry of the People’s Church of Franklin, TN, theevent’s hosts, cancelled at the last minute without any time to send anotice to anyone who was interested in attending. I was out of townlast week helping my family care for my father who was recoveringfrom surgery and was not able to get the word to anyone that it hadbeen cancelled.
