A Hundred Year Homecoming
 Strong Roots - New Life!
McKendree Celebrates its 100-yearold historic sanctuary - Oct 30-31, 2010

McKendree To Celebrate Its Historic Sanctuary
“A Hundred Year Homecoming”
 Strong Roots - New Life!

We are told in the Book of Leviticusthat the Hebrews were mandated tocelebrate a Year of Jubilee at the endof every seven Sabbatical cycles, or 50years. McKendree is celebrating notone cycle, but two in the year 2010!On July 4, 1905 the third churchnamed for Bishop William McKendree, and the sixth church belonging to thatcongregation, burned to the ground. The Sunday following the fire, Dr. E.B.Chappell preached that
"The calamity isa call for opportunities presented."
There was an immediate concernover discussion that the church wouldbe sold, and the Official Board wasoffered $115,000 for the valuable landand location. Wiser heads prevailedand the Board refused that first offer. InFebruary of 1906 an architect was giventhe right to furnish plans for a newbuilding. Despite other considerations ofmoving, the cornerstone was laid onDecember 10, 1907 and McKendreereaffirmed its mission as an inner-citychurch!By 1910
The Banner
described thenew structure as being
"a model inarchitectural appearance and interior arrangements."
The pastor's study waslocated behind the sanctuary on themain floor, and in the basement was amodern kitchen. Of special interest werethe beautiful sanctuary windowsdepicting scenes from the life of Christwhich have since been a focal point ofinterest and worship.
To recognize the second Year ofJubilee of our sanctuary, 100 years oldnow in 2010, we are planning a specialweekend of events on October 30-31,2010. Please save the date!
