This paper seeks to understand and explain how the human rights frameworks can offer a different way for mental health activists to engage with the system and influence improvements in how care is delivered. Before considering what benefits there may be for advocates of change in adopting human rights-based approaches it would be worthwhile to examine briefly some of the concepts and debates around what is meant by human rights and how they have been understood by legal theorists.
