CAMP RED CLOUD
– A chapelbuilt more than 45 years ago whenSoldiers served in Area I withoutfamilies is undergoing a major overhaulthat’ll make it family-friendly for thefirst time. The $1.2 million stem-to-sternrenovation of the West Casey Chapelis under way at Camp Casey and isscheduled to finish by the end of nextMarch. The project includes construction of a multi-purpose room that will createmuch-needed space for a wider rangeof activities including Thanksgivingand other holiday gatherings, as wellas after-service fellowship time andsmall-group meetings. The chapel will also get its firstplayground, an addition that reflectsthe ongoing push in Area I to transformthe area into one increasingly able toaccommodate its military families, officials said.“Before there were no families sothe building was built for the single-Soldiers community,” said Lt. Col. Suk- jong Lee, Area I garrison chaplain.“So right now, we’re changing that,”she said. “This is the first chapel facility that has families in mind” in Area I. Also planned are a new metalroof, ceiling, floors, walls, doorsand windows, new heating and airconditioning, plumbing, new power, phone and lighting systems, as wellas new rest rooms, kitchen cabinetsand various other improvements, saidDewey McLean, project manager withthe engineering division of U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud’s Department of Public Works.Outside the chapel will be newlandscaping in addition to the newplayground. The sanctuary will have a baptismalbuilt under the floor near the altar. It can be uncovered for use duringbaptismal services. The chapel was built in 1965. Workers did minor, miscellaneousrepairs in 1984 but the chapel’s neverhad a renovation, said Jose Garcia, master planner at USAG Red CloudDirectorate of Public Works.Area I has seen rapid growth of military families over the past two years, when the Army gave the okay forSoldiers to be stationed in the region with their families. For the West Casey Chapel, that’smeant growth in the number of community members who meet forreligious services, some 200 or moreeach week, said Lee. That figureincludes Protestant and Catholicservices and individual groups thathold regular meetings, such as theProtestant Women of the Chapel, shesaid. The multi-purpose room can bedivided into a number of smaller roomsthat can serve various uses, includingBible studies, Sunday School classes, among others.Lee said she especially welcomedthe renovation because the WestCasey Chapel is the meeting place for a“thriving” Protestant congregation, oneof Area I’s largest religious assemblies.People have been telling her they lack space at the chapel for one type of activity or another, she said.“Now,” said Lee, “ we can say, ‘Hereit is.’”

Area I gearing up for winter
By Franklin Fisher

CAMP RED CLOUD
– Althoughicy winds and heavy snows haven’tblustered their way onto the peninsula just yet, Area I officials are fast gettingready for winter.“We start prepping that in the first week of November because we couldhave snow at anytime from here onout,” said Marshall Downs, operationsmaintenance chief with U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud’s Directorate of Public Works. Those preparations cover everythingfrom getting snow removal equipmentready to issuing safety tips and evenholding a table-top exercise to rehearsefor winter weather emergencies.“I would say the biggest threat isdriving hazards,” said John Bedwell, emergency operations specialist withUSAG Red Cloud’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization andSecurity.
Driving Safety
Before winter arrives, get yourcar tuned up.
• Avoid driving in snow or ice
storms. If you must travel, driveslowly. Let someone know what routeyou’re taking and when you plan toarrive so they can alert authorities if you don’t get there.
• If your car is parked outside,
make sure the exhaust pipe and the area around it are free of snow
At the Jeongok Prehistory Museum near Pocheon Nov. 8, Soldiers from Area I joined students from the Dongducheon ForeignLanguage High School for a look at various exhibits. Here, they view an exhibit that featured a reproduction of a 5,000-year-old mummy that was found in the Alps and remains on display at a museum in Italy. The group also visited the African Art Museum in Pocheon. — U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Lee Jae-gwang.
Getting their eyes on the prehistoric past
“We know from the past thatthe roads can get icy,” he said. “Caraccidents are very common.” Along with road accidents, “slips, trips and falls” account for a highnumber of winter injuries, said GlennHarman, the garrison’s safety manager. And there’s the possibility of poweroutages triggered, for example, whena tree limb weighed down with snowbreaks and brings down power lines. And a big storm can trigger closure of schools and other facilities. So garrison officials are gearing up.Winter preparation “kind of kicksoff” with the fall cleanup Nov. 15 –17, said Bedwell. Each season it seesSoldiers on Area I installations clearingfallen limbs and other debris, he said.In addition, garrison public workscrews have placed boxes of salt outsidebuildings at Area I installations, to belaid on walkways. And they’ve readied the snow plowsand other equipment they’ll need toclear roads and lay salt and sand. The garrison and 2nd Infantry Division have also mounted theirannual winter safety campaigns. They include winter driver safety training and distribution of wintersafety tips. And, said Bedwell, garrison officialshave taken steps to ensure they’ll be inclose contact with their 2nd Infantry Division counterparts to track weatherconditions and take actions that areboth timely and well-coordinated.In addition, USAG Red CloudPublic Affairs has created a mobile webapplication for community membersto get an immediate snapshot of themost current Area I information forroad conditions, gates, schools (Casey Elementary and Yongsan High School),snow conditions and more. Access thesite at http://redcloud.korea.army.mil/mobile. The information is also on theUSAG Red Cloud Facebook page andUSAG Red Cloud web site, and is madeavailable to the community via AFNTV crawler and radio.

before you start the car. Snow in oraround the exhaust can cause highlevels of carbon monoxide in the car.
• If your car stalls or gets stuck in
snow, light two flares and place one ateach end of the car, a safe distanceaway. Make sure snow has not blocked the exhaust pipe. Then stay in yourvehicle and open a window slightly tolet in fresh air. Wrap yourself in blanketsand run your heater for a few minutesevery hour to keep warm.
Heating Your Home
• Keep portable space heaters
at least three feet from anything  that can burn, including bedding, furniture, clothing. Never drapeclothing over a space heater to dry.
• Keep children away from space
heaters. Never leave children in aroom alone when a space heater isin use.
• Never use range or oven to heat
