CAMP RED CLOUD
– Althoughicy winds and heavy snows haven’tblustered their way onto the peninsula just yet, Area I officials are fast gettingready for winter.“We start prepping that in the first week of November because we couldhave snow at anytime from here onout,” said Marshall Downs, operationsmaintenance chief with U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud’s Directorate of Public Works. Those preparations cover everythingfrom getting snow removal equipmentready to issuing safety tips and evenholding a table-top exercise to rehearsefor winter weather emergencies.“I would say the biggest threat isdriving hazards,” said John Bedwell, emergency operations specialist withUSAG Red Cloud’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization andSecurity.
Driving Safety
•
Before winter arrives, get yourcar tuned up.
• Avoid driving in snow or ice
storms. If you must travel, driveslowly. Let someone know what routeyou’re taking and when you plan toarrive so they can alert authorities if you don’t get there.
• If your car is parked outside,
make sure the exhaust pipe and the area around it are free of snow
At the Jeongok Prehistory Museum near Pocheon Nov. 8, Soldiers from Area I joined students from the Dongducheon ForeignLanguage High School for a look at various exhibits. Here, they view an exhibit that featured a reproduction of a 5,000-year-old mummy that was found in the Alps and remains on display at a museum in Italy. The group also visited the African Art Museum in Pocheon. — U.S. Army photo by Pfc. Lee Jae-gwang.
Getting their eyes on the prehistoric past
“We know from the past thatthe roads can get icy,” he said. “Caraccidents are very common.” Along with road accidents, “slips, trips and falls” account for a highnumber of winter injuries, said GlennHarman, the garrison’s safety manager. And there’s the possibility of poweroutages triggered, for example, whena tree limb weighed down with snowbreaks and brings down power lines. And a big storm can trigger closure of schools and other facilities. So garrison officials are gearing up.Winter preparation “kind of kicksoff” with the fall cleanup Nov. 15 –17, said Bedwell. Each season it seesSoldiers on Area I installations clearingfallen limbs and other debris, he said.In addition, garrison public workscrews have placed boxes of salt outsidebuildings at Area I installations, to belaid on walkways. And they’ve readied the snow plowsand other equipment they’ll need toclear roads and lay salt and sand. The garrison and 2nd Infantry Division have also mounted theirannual winter safety campaigns. They include winter driver safety training and distribution of wintersafety tips. And, said Bedwell, garrison officialshave taken steps to ensure they’ll be inclose contact with their 2nd Infantry Division counterparts to track weatherconditions and take actions that areboth timely and well-coordinated.In addition, USAG Red CloudPublic Affairs has created a mobile webapplication for community membersto get an immediate snapshot of themost current Area I information forroad conditions, gates, schools (Casey Elementary and Yongsan High School),snow conditions and more.
