A LANDSCAPE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE COASTAL TOURISM THE CASE OF MURTER ISLAND, CROATIA
Tourism and landscape are interwoven with each other. Tourism influences landscapes (transformation of landscape by tourism) and landscapes influenced tourism (decisions for holidays are influenced by landscapes). Tourism is mainly concentrated along the coast, because of the favourable geo-environmental characters, such as climate and the availability of beaches. Since the sixties sun, sea, and sand is the main tourist product, which fits in Fordist tourism patterns (mass scaled, packaged, and cheap). Fordist tourism is often considered as unsustainable tourism, because it causes a lot of environmental, socio-cultural, economic, and aesthetic problems. Since the eightie s another category of tourism appeared: post-Fordist tourism. Post-Fordist tourism is based on small scale, individual tourism, with local experiences on environmental friendly destinations. This tourism product is more diverse than sun, sea, and sand and consist for example forms of nature, culture, and adventurous tourism. An important segment of post-Fordist tourism is sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism can be described as “the suitable balance between the environment, the economic and socio-cultural aspects., which is established to guarantee its long term sustainability” (UNEP and WTO 2005). Because this is a landscape architecture thesis aesthetic sustainability (values and experiences about design) is added to these aspects. Sustainable tourism is often considered as the way to solve the problems caused by Fordist tourism. To achieve sustainability in tourism all kind of literature and policy documents proposing ‘actions’ to make tourism more sustainable. Solutions are mainly found in planning approaches (such as the ICZM and the EIA), impact-based methods (tourism carrying capacity and the ecological footprint), and policy documents. One of the most commonly used and clear documents is the guide for policy-makers for making tourism more sustainable of the United Nations Environmental Programme in collaboration with the World Tourism Organisation. These solutions are helpful, but they are lacking concrete spatial tools to make tourism sustainable. On the other hand ad-hoc, technical solutions are proposed for achieving sustainability in tourism. Between the theoretical solutions and the technical solutions there is a gap: the lack of spatial applications. The purpose of this thesis is to fill this gap by developing landscape strategies and general design principles (theoretical aim). To reach the theoretical aim a landscape approach to sustainable tourism is constructed (methodological aim), which is applied on a case study on the island of Murter, Croatia (empirical aim). The landscape approach is an approach were the landscape is central instead of place or the environment, which means that function is combined with the sensory world (Koh 2008). The theoretical, methodological and empirical aims are clarified by the following research questions: • Which landscape strategy and general design principles can contribute to translate sustainable tourism theory into a spatial design for sustainable tourism developments ? (theoretical) • What kind of landscape design and principles can guide tourism developments in sustainable way on the island of Murter, Croatia? (empirical) • How to develop a landscape strategy and design principles for sustainable tourism developments? (methodological) Landscape architecture has the opportunity to create spatial landscape based solutions and to guide sustainable tourism developments in a integrative and holistic way. As input for designing sustainable tourism landscapes on Murter Island.

As part of our Master Thesis project at the Wageningen University (The Netherlands) on sustainable tourism development on Murter Island, we organized a workshop for everyone who was interested in tourism related to the environment. Beside the presentation of the preliminary results of our project, the aim of this workshop was to gain more knowledge about the opinions and ideas of local people. This local knowledge is very useful for making a spatial landscape plan for guiding tourism developments on Murter island. To gather this information we organized two interactive activities: • Picture rating: where the participants have to choose whether they like or dislike certain images for the future on their island. • Sketching: here the participants was asked to come up with spatial ideas for Murter island as they like to see it in 2030 and draw the ideas on a map. Three groups with an average of ten people each participated actively in this workshop, and they came up with interesting and refreshing ideas. With this report we summarize the outcomes of this workshop and link it to our thesis project.

After the creation of the World, every nation was given a piece of Earth; the Croats were left a piece of mainland and the sea that was at first intended for God himself. According to the legend, God leaned over this magical part of the World and scattered jewels along the Croatian coastline. Right in the middle, in the vicinity of the mainland, a beautiful jewel with a ring of pearls was caught, the greatest island - Murter, surrounded by numerous islands and islets of unusual forms and beauty. Among the islets which adorn the island of Murter, the special ones are those in form of a crown, which explains their name - Kornati.
