Salvador Allende - A Biography of the Heart
This document comprises two chapters from Chilean journalist Eduardo Labarca's controversial 2007 biography of his longtime acquaintance. I translated these texts into English with the author's permission. Part One, Chapter One deals with Allende's election to the presidency on September 4, 1970, and sets the record straight as to where Allende spent that night. Part 4, Chapter 6 reports on a 1971 journey the president made around South America. Labarca was one of the journalists who flew on Allende’s official plane to cover the trip.

The autobiography of Fernando Payaguaje, the last shaman-chief of the Secoya tribe of the Ecuadorian rain forest, as told to his grandsons. Originally published in Spanish as El bebedor de yajé. The book includes myths, legends, and personal histories, including a discussion of the changes that took place in the Secoyas' lives in the 20th century, and Payaguaje's recollections of his apprenticeship and practice as a yajé uncucui, a drinker of ayahuasca, and intibaike, leader of his group. The present version of this text was published in Quito in 2008 by CICAME. The book's cover photo, which is my profile picture, was taken by Karl Gartelmann in, I believe, 1969, and depicts a Siona shaman in a nighttime yagé ceremony.
