Some of the items listed are undocumented. Furtherinformation on protocols can be found in the memo "Official InternetProtocols" [40]. The more prominent and more generally used aredocumented in the "DDN Protocol Handbook" [17] prepared by the NIC.Other collections of older or obsolete protocols are contained in the"Internet Protocol Transition Workbook" [18], or in the "ARPANETProtocol Transition Handbook" [19]. For further information onordering the complete 1985 DDN Protocol Handbook, contact theHostmaster. Also, the Internet Activities Board (IAB) publishes the"IAB Official Protocol Standards" [52], which describes the state ofstandardization of protocols used in the Internet. RFC 1117 Internet Numbers August 1989The lists below contain the name and network mailbox of theindividuals responsible for each registered network or autonomoussystem. The bracketed entry, e.g., [nn,iii], at the right handmargin of the page indicates a reference for the listed network orautonomous system, where the number ("nn") cites the document and theletters ("iii") cite the NIC Handle of the responsible person. TheNIC Handle is a unique identifier that is used in the NICWHOIS/NICNAME service. People occasionally change electronicmailboxes. To find out the current network mailbox or phone numberfor an individual, or to get information about a registered network,use the NIC WHOIS/NICNAME service or contact HOSTMASTER@NIC.DDN.MIL.The convention used for the documentation of Internet Protocols is toexpress numbers in decimal and to picture data in "big-endian" order[39]. That is, fields are described left to right, with the mostsignificant octet on the left and the least significant octet on theright.The order of transmission of the header and data described in thisdocument is resolved to the octet level. Whenever a diagram shows agroup of octets, the order of transmission of those octets is thenormal order in which they are read in English.
