3From All h's mercy and kindness to His servants and from His

favor upon them is that He sent to them a Messenger from
amongst themselves, to convey to them the Message from their
Lord, to guide them to everything that benefits them, and to warn
them from everything that harms them.
Indeed the Prophet (?) fulfilled his duty of conveying the Message
in the most complete and perfect of manners - he directed
his Ummah towards every good, and he warned them against
every evil.
All h chose for accompanying him and taking knowledge from

him a people who are the best of this nation, which is itself the
best of all nations. All h honored them by allowing them to accompany

His Prophet (?). He favored them in this worldly life
by giving them the opportunity to see him and hear his had th

directly from his noble mouth. This is the bounty of All h which

He bestows upon whom He wills, and All h possesses the greatest

of bounties.
Indeed the Companions conveyed from All h's Messenger (?)

that which he was sent with from guidance in the most complete and perfect form. They will have the greatest of rewards due to their companionship of All h's Messenger (?), their fighting in

Jih d along his side, and their noble actions in spreading Isl m.

And they will also accumulate the rewards of those who come
after them since they served as the intermediaries between them
and All h's Messenger (?). This is due to his (?) saying:

Whoever calls towards guidance, he will have a reward

equal to the reward earned by those who practice that
4guidance after him, and it will not reduce anything from
their reward. 1

This had th has been related of the Prophet (?) by Muslim in his

Sah h. All h praised the Companions in His Mighty Book, and

the Messenger of All h (? praised them in his purified Sunnah,

and this is enough for them as a virtue and honor.
All h says:

And the foremost to embrace Isl m of the Muh jir n

and the Ans r and also those who followed them in

goodness, All h is pleased with them and they are

pleased with Him. All h has prepared for them gardens

under which rivers flow (Paradise) to dwell therein forever.
That is the supreme success. [S rah At-Tawbah:

100]
And He says:
Muhammad is the Messenger of All h. And those who

are with him are severe against the disbelievers, merciful
towards one another. You can see them bowing and
prostrating (in prayer), seeking Bounty from All h and

(His) Good Pleasure. Their marks (of Faith) are on their faces (foreheads) from the traces of prostration. This is their description in the Torah. But their description in the Gospel is like that of a cultivated seed, which sends forth its shoot, then makes it strong and becomes thick, and it stands straight on its stem, pleasing the farmers, that he may enrage the disbelievers with them. All h has

promised those among them who believe and do good
1 Sah h Had th: Reported by Muslim (2674), Abu Daw d (4609), At-Tirmidh

(2676), Ibn M jah (206) and others.

5deeds, forgiveness and a mighty reward. [S rah Al-Fat'h:

29]
In All h's saying concerning the Sah bah,
that he may enrage

the disbelievers with them, is the severest ruling, the

harshest threat and the worst of warnings for those who are enraged
by the Sah bah or those who have some hatred for them in

their hearts.
All h says:

Not equal among you are those who spent and fought

before the Victory (Treaty of Hudaybiyah) [i.e. they are
not equal to those who came after the Victory]. They are
higher in degree than those who spent and fought (in
All h's Cause) afterward. But to all, All h has promised

the best reward. And All h is All-Aware of what you do.

[S rah Al-Had d: 10]

Concerning the distribution of war-booty, All h says:

(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor

emigrants who were expelled from their homes and
properties, seeking bounties from All h and looking to

please Him, and helping All h and His Messenger.

These are the truthful ones. * And (it is also) for those
who before them, had homes (in Mad nah) and then accepted

the Faith (Isl m). They are the ones who love

those who migrated to them, and they have no jealousy
in their hearts for that which they (Muh jir n) have been

given (of booty from Banu N dir). Instead, they give

them preference over themselves even though they had
more of a need for it than them. And whoever guards
himself from his own miserliness, then these will be the
successful. * And those who come after them say: Our

Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in
6

Faith. And put not in our hearts any hatred against those
who have believed. Our Lord, You are indeed full of
kindness, most Merciful.

[S rah Al-Hashr: 8-10]

The first of these three ay t from Surat Al-Hashr is in reference

to the Muh jir n (the Sah bah who migrated from Makkah to

Mad nah). The second ayah refers to the Ans r (the Sah bah who

resided in Mad nah who helped and took in the Muh jir n). The

third ayah refers to those who will come after the Muh jir n and

the Ans r, who seek All h's forgiveness for them and ask Him

not to put hatred in their hearts for them. There is nothing beyond
these three groups except for one who deserts (them) and
falls into one of the traps of the Devil. This is why 'A'ishah (?)
told 'Urwah Ibn Az-Zubair concerning the condition of some of
those who deserted and were forsaken: They were commanded

to seek forgiveness for the Companions of All h's Messenger (?),

but they (instead) reviled them.
Im m Muslim transmitted this report in the last part of his Sah h.

An-Nawaw said in his explanation of it, after mentioning the

ayah of S rah Al-Hashr:

Im m M lik used this as proof for his ruling that the one

who reviles the Sah bah has no right to the war-booty.

This is because All h only made it for those who seek forgiveness

for them from amongst those who come after
them.
Ibn Kath r said in his tafs r of this ayah:

How great is the ruling that Im m M lik derived from

this ayah, in that the R fid - the one who reviles the Companions

- has no portion of the wealth from the war-booty
due to his lack of characterizing himself with the attributes
of those whom All h has praised in His (?) saying:

Our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded

us in Faith. And put not in our hearts any hatred
7against those who have believed. Our Lord, You are indeed
full of kindness, most Merciful.
The Prophet (?) said:
The best of mankind is my generation, then those that

come after them, then those that come after them. 2

This had th was reported by Al-Bukh r , Muslim and others from

the report of 'Imr n Ibn Husayn and 'Abdull h Ibn Mas' d, may

All h be pleased with both of them. Muslim reported it on the

authority of Abu Hurairah with the wording:
The best among my nation (ummah) is the generation I

was sent to - then those that come after them, then those
that come after them.
All h knows best if he mentioned the third or not. Muslim also

reported it from 'A'ishah that she said:
A man once asked the Prophet: Which people are the best?

So he responded: The generation of people that I am in

(now), then the second (generation), then the third.
It is reported in the two Sah hs (of Al-Bukh r and Muslim) from

the narration of Abu Sa' d Al-Khudr (?) that the Messenger of

All h (?) said:

There will come upon the people a time in which a

group of people will fight (in Jih d), and it will be said:

Is there anyone amongst you who accompanied All h's

Messenger (?) [i.e. the Sah bah (companions)]?' They

will reply, Yes, and so they will be given victory. Then
