Addictive Meds

from JackInTheBox in Research, Health & Medicine

TIME magazine's June 16, 2008 cover story by Mark Thompson was a detailed story about US troops being given antidepressant drugs to deal with battlefield stress. A quote from the article (p 41) states "The newer drugs have fewer side effects and, unlike earlier drugs, are generally not addictive...

Confusing Legal Technicalities

from JackInTheBox in Research, Law

I've decided that the best way to be given a fair shake in the world today is become a lawyer. The main problem with laws is that they're very confusing to mentally ill people. Today I was outside stroking a stray cat which appeared to have just gorged on whipped cream...

Princess11 scribbled: Yes, too much medication can really mess things up. It took many years for me to find my wave. I don't fight it like I did when I was a kid. I tread water instead. But you know, there is something, not sure what to call it exactly (as you mentioned) that is very beautiful about depression. Its as if we feel more than the "normal" person. Sometimes I tell my friends that its like standing naked outside through every season. You feel every pelt of hail, every summer breeze and the whip lash of a fierce wind. Thanks for the comment

Princess11 scribbled: I had a friend that was put in a mental health facility after a suicide attempt (72 hours) I was there with her every day. Those people are dreadful. They were the worst care givers! They over medicated her with seroquel by 400mgs and then on the second day tried to give her 400 mgs instead of the 200 mgs she was prescribed. When she told them this they said "are you refusing medication" in a tone... I could not be with her at night because I was not allowed. But she had an anxiety attack from the taking too much seroquel which has happened to me too. She went to the nurses station and asked to speak to her because she was having severe anxiety and the nurse said "you have are supose to do your talking during the day" then gave her a sleeping pill. Immovein. (I don't know how you spell it) When she was transfered from the ICU ward at Perry Sound West hospital to Penetanguishing Mental Health Centre.. I went with them. I was disgusted by this place. She was assessed in a room with a bed that was metal and had shackles hanging from each post with sheets that were torn and bars on the windows. She attempted suicide as a result of severe paxil withdrawal and was not homocidal in any way. It scared the life out of me. I felt like we had taken a step back in time to the early 1900's and the doctor was a beast and very rude. He read her file and was laughing at it and then asked her "are you a puppet master" She is a sweet girl. I don't know what he meant by that but it was disgusting. No wonder people shy away from asking for help.
