The Rigveda describes comets metaphorically as celestial fires. The word dhumaketu which means comet in Indian languages is already used in RV. This is closely linked to Maruts and Vibhavasu. Maruts beyond reasonable doubt represent meteoritic showers and not ordinary rainfall and storms.
