What is Twitter?

The Lingo:
Tweets
: your 140 character post
Followers
: the people that choose to subscribe to your updates. They are called friends in otherservices, but on Twitter, they’re followers. You can “follow” other peoples updates by clickingthe “Follow” button underneath their photo. You can follow them without them following you,and vice versa, but many people will mutually follow you as long as you seem fairly interesting.
Tweeps, Tweeple, Twitterverse
: individual or groups of people using Twitter
Retweet
, RT: reposting another persons tweet to share something interesting with yourfollowers or help someone expand the reach of their message.
Reply
: Replying to someone’s tweet by including an @ symbol and their username. It also letsyou nudge someone to let them know you mentioned them, or to let your followers findanother interesting person to follow.
Direct Message, DM
: A private message to another user. This does not show up in your regularTwitter stream. The person must be following you in order for you to be able to direct messagethem.And the biggest question of all…
How do I use this in my real estate business?
The nice thing about Twitter, is that you can use it at whatever level you like. It can be mostlypersonal, and let you connect and develop relationships with other likeminded folks. It can bemostly business, and provide insights into the market, links to new listings, etc. Or, it can be amix of both.For me, I think the mix is the best way to approach Twitter for real estate. You share yourknowledge, your business updates, what’s going on in your business life so that people knowwhat you do. And you connect with them on a personal level so that when the time comes,you’re the Twitter friend they think of for real estate.So a great way to do this is to get involved with other peoples’ conversations. They mentionedtheir team is in the big game? Cheer with them, or “tease” them gently if you are on the otherside. Someone mentions a hobby of theirs that you enjoy also? Recommend a good store forsupplies, or a great article you read on the subject. They post a link to an article? Commentback via Twitter on your thoughts.
 
The next section will go into the wide variety of Twitter tools that are out there to help youcreate searches for keywords, find local people to follow, and generally increase Twitters’potential even more.But for now, if you haven’t signed up already, start there. Part II – 12 Twitter Tools
Now that we’ve covered the fundamentals, let’s move on to tools and tips to super-charge yourtime spent on Twitter.
1.Advanced Twitter Search
- this is where I would start in order to find people to follow. Youcan search for people you know, and by keyword and area. Follow some active Realtors® to seehow they use it. Watch from the consumer’s perspective - is it obnoxious and spammy?Mundane life details? Or valuable content?You can search by your local area, follow interesting people in the community and begin tointeract with them personally.You can even use keywords to develop relationships based on common personal interests,whether or not they are local to you. Your other followers will be watching, and begin to feel asif they know you, even if you haven’t interacted much.
2.Twellow.com
- Twellow is like the yellow pages of Twitter. Not only can you search and findinteresting people here, you can also create your own listing, giving followers a little moreinformation about you as well as giving the search engines yet another place to find you. Youcan enter in your bio (which allows keyword-rich html links), and links to all the other placesthey can find you online - Facebook, LinkedIn, Pulse, Plaxo, etc.
3.Tweetbeep.com
- TweetBeep is an alert system similar to Google Alerts. You simply enter inany word or phrase you want to track on Twitter, and you get email alerts whenever thatkeyword or phrase is mentioned. This is a good way to track replies, your keyword, see what’sgoing on in your area, etc.
