EMERGENCY DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IN THE HOMEThere are some basic concepts to survival in any emergency situation. They are as follows:In any home there should be items that can be used in case of an emergency or disaster occurring. These items are not to be for regular daily use as they should be stored for the long term and only for emergency situations. This is a basic list of some of the items that are necessary for an emergencydisaster preparedness kit in your household.
Food
water
tools (basic set of standard tools and a multi for your pocket that you can take anywhere)
emergency supplies such as flashlights, candles, foodstuffs and medications.
Specialty supplies as needed for the whole family and certain individuals with needs.
A way of carrying needed supplies with you in case of an emergency evacuation.
clothing (both hot and cold weather)FOOD/NUTRITIONThe kind of food that you have in your home for an emergency or disaster must be able to be store for long periods of time. This is a necessary component of the survival aspect. The standard exceptedallowance of food is generally seventy two hours worth of food per person in the home. It is imperativethat you make sure that the food you stock will not go bad on you. There are various forms of foodstuffs that you can store, and each has it's advantages and disadvantages. Consider storing freezedried foodstuffs as they can store for up to ten years or more if kept at proper temps. Dehydratedfoodstuffs is another good alternative as they can store for ten or more years if kept in the correcttemps. MRE's or Meals Ready To Eat, which is the kind of foodstuff that the military uses is another good choice although the shelf life is not as long as the other two options. You want to be able to eatfoodstuffs that don't need a lot of heat or water to prepare as your will need to water for more importantthings such as staying hydrated. All of the aforementioned foods can be packed for evacuation if necessary as well. The MRE's are the best choice in my opinion for evacuation as they need not heat or water. Please do not forget that you might need to store some special foods for those in the home withspecial needs as well.WATER/HYDRATIONStoring water in another important consideration. Store bought water can store for long periods of timeand the bottles have already been sanitized at the factory so no need to worry about sanitizing storageunits in the home. At least seventy two hours of water per person in standard and extra will be neededfor chores such as cooking and cleaning. All in all it is a good idea to store up to ten days of water per  person if space allows. There are new water products on the market today which is what I call water that is better than water. This is vitamin water and is an excellent choice for keeping the body hydratedand the electrolytes in good order.WORKING TOOLS/POCKET MULTI TOOLSIn a home emergency preparedness kit there will be a need for working tools and tools that you cancarry on you in case of an evacuation. A flashlight is a must for every person in the home and today youcan use the battery powered type or the new LED type that has a bulb that can last up to one hundredthousand hours and some of the models come with a hand crank so that you never need batteries in thefirst place. Don't forget things like camping pots and pans to cook with if necessary. A good qualityemergency preparedness book or guide is a good read and something to always keep around for reference. Money, I know it sounds weird in case of emergency but money in any form such as paper,
