When we started Room to Read’s Girls’ Education programin 2001, we ocused on providing a need-based, girls-onlyscholarship program to keep girls enrolled in primary andsecondary school. It was our rst venture into the terrain o girls’ education, and the result o our intervention has meantthat thousands o girls are now pursuing their dreams o an education.Through the years, however, we have learned that the barriersto girls’ education and empowerment extend past householdeconomic conditions and material costs. As a result, ourGirls’ Education program has naturally evolved into a moreholistic approach that ocuses not just on assisting with thecosts to support a girl through secondary school, but also ondeveloping the skills she needs to negotiate key lie decisions.In 2007, we added lie skills education to our program andcounseling on issues such as physical health and careerguidance. Room to Read also added a mentoring componentin which local women are trained and coached to provideongoing support to the girls in our program, because researchshows that women teachers and role models make a criticaldierence in encouraging girls to stay in school.Now operating our Girls’ Education program in eight countries,we’re proud to report Room to Read has provided more than26,000 years o education to more than 9,000 girls and allowedthem the opportunity to learn in a positive environment and tothrive as strong and educated women in the uture.While our success has been remarkable and the impactmeasurable—or example, in 2009, 96 percent o our scholarsadvanced to the next grade level—there is still much work tobe done to close the gender gap in education in the developingworld. In 2009, Room to Read undertook a strategic planningexercise to refect on our strengths as an organization overthe last 10 years, and to dene who we want to be in oursecond decade. During this process, Room to Read rearmed
its commitment to work towards gender equality in education
through a program ocused on girls. We clearly dened ourGirls’ Education program objectives to ensure the investmentwe are all making is having the greatest possible impact.Beginning in 2010, we will ocus on enhancing and buildingupon the existing Girls’ Education program components tomake sure we continue to provide the support and lie skillsdevelopment that each girl needs to succeed in the classroomand beyond. We will continue to target girls making thetransition to secondary school, a sensitive juncture prone tohigh dropout rates among emale students. In addition, wewill ocus our work in areas where there is signicant genderdisparity in education and where our Girls’ Education programcan have the greatest impact. We eel that this approach,in tandem with community and government partnershipswithin the countries where we operate, will best position us toaect systemic and sustainable change in closing the gendereducation gap.Education is critical to improving the status o women aroundthe world and is considered the best investment you can maketo address global poverty in the developing world. That is whyRoom to Read remains committed to supporting girls in their
