The NeedOur Work
While India has made very steady economic progressover the last several decades, the benefits of this growthhave not reached tens of millions of Indian children, 87percent of whom live in rural areas. The United Nationsestimates that India has the highest number of illiteratepeople in the world, with over 269 million people notable to read or write – 35 percent of the world’s illiteratepopulation. Further, approximately 52 percent ofstudents in India, the majority girls, drop out of schoolRoom to Read India, launched in 2003, focuses onestablishing libraries and building the capacity ofteachers and volunteers to encourage the habit and joyof reading. We also publish high-quality, illustratedreading materials for young readers to respond to thedearth of appropriate children’s literature, especially inrural India. Our Girls’ Education Program supportsdisadvantaged girls to complete secondary school withthe skills needed to negotiate life decisions. This includesslum dwellers, migrant workers, child laborers, girlswithout parents/guardians, Dalit and tribal girls, girls whoare physically challenged, and girls living in very remote
before finishing secondary school.and rural communities.
India has been a significant component of our success. Since2003, we have impacted the lives of over 825,000 children ofIndia by:
Our team of Indian nationals works with both rural andurban slum communities where illiteracy rates remainhigh, gender disparities persist, and few educationalresources exist. Most of our interventions areconcentrated in government public schools and non-profit alternative educational centers, but we alsosupport some local community centers. We are workingtoward strengthening the government’s efforts to meetits goal of universalizing quality elementary educationfor all children. We work in partnership with the stategovernments as well as local NGOs to implement andmonitor our work and promote long-term sustainability. We currently work in the following regions: AndhraPradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
